GPU for 2 screens at work needed...

Hi people

It's been quite a few weeks now and I've gotten out of touch with this place. But this morning, my boss suggested that I go grab another screen for my workstation. Problem is that I am currently using a crappy Q35 chipset, including the integrated graphics core. Not only is it a pain in terms of performance, but also, it doesn't support a second screen (there simply is no additional interface to connect a monitor to...).

So I decided to get myself a (possibly) cheap Dual DVI GPU, with the XFX HD 4650 in mind. The point is that I can't stick to a real low-end solution because I am a WPF developer (yes, fancy animations and lots of GPU work); and I am indeed going to need quite a lot of power at an affordable price. Would this Radeon do the job for me? I'll be using 2 24" screens

Thank you very much

How were you developing with lots of GPU work on integrated graphics before?

What programs do you use? What's your budget?

I have that same model and it works great performance-wise. However, I have a dvi/vga as well as dvi/dvi model- the latter has a much noisier fan though they look identical. I ended up removing the fan (you'll need a precision screwdriver) and zip-tying a 80mm fan I had lying around.

I'm using 2x23" 1080p monitors and am able to play company of heroes, EVE, tf2 at comfortable framerates.

Most any cheap dual dvi card will do. I would suggest the new ATI 5450 or 5670. Unless you're doing something really unorthodox, WPF development shouldn't require much in terms of graphics horsepower.

Well, to put it in simple terms, I am currently developing extensions for a well known business software suite and it seems like our biggest client is kind of inspired by minority report (yeah, I mean the movie with the futuristic computers), making it worthwhile for us to develop some fancy useless GUI modules. This includes 3D effects with customized shaders and stuff. And I repeat that this is not a game, it's CRM software...

My budget is limited to approx. 100 bucks. I'm going to take a look at those HD 5000s, maybe I can find a cheap one somewhere.

Thank you people.

Wow, a "practical" application of game functions. How about a video of it in action? ^_^

The advantage of the hd 5000 series is you can try to talk your bos sinto how useful 3 screens at once would be :D

In reality any ati or nvidia card that does not need a power connector would be fine, unless you need low profile. A GT 240, or 220, or ati hd 4600, or 5400/5600. a lower clocked 5670 should come out in a week or so also, and have similiar hardware to the 5670, only ddr3.

Yeah well, I don't have the time to make a video and edit it to blur out sensitive information, but basically this module is used to pull up information on customers (and I mean ANY kind of information) on a multi-layer, virtual hologram mapped on a slightly curved transparent canvas, which itself will be projected on a wall or a table. Like you have a picture of a customer and basic information such as address and phone numbers, but also any documents and other related entities available in an experimental user interface. There is also a suggestion that we implement multi-touch for this module (this is Windows 7 exclusive), but that's going to be one expensive joke...

Anyhow, I can't find a cheap series 5000 card with Dual DVI; and I don't want to use VGA. I assume that using one DVI and one HDMI is possible for driving two screens?

Wow! that sounds absolutely amazing! I'd love to see that in action, but I understand the sensitivity of private info :(

CSI anyone?

Anyway, i'm sorry i can't contribute, but good luck on the cool project mate. ^_^
