GPU died, looking for replacement advice

The fan in my current GPU (a GTX 460 SE) has died and I'm looking for some recommendations on a replacement card. I'm not looking for something that will max out Crysis 3, but a nice upgrade from the old card would be good enough. Based on the rest of my specs, posted below, what would you recommend? Keep in mind that my budget is maybe around $100-$125 or so, at the most.

My specs:

Mobo: Asus P5N-E SLI
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
PSU: Antec NeoPower 650w
GPU: GTX 460 SE 1GB
RAM: 2GB
OS: Win 7 64 bit

I would suggest taking a look at the hotdeals forum or slickdeals.net. Basically a gtx660 is like the 460 x2 in sli. There are some deals at around $125. As an alternative the 750ti is also a pretty comparable card (a little slower than 660 but not as power hungry) around the same price bracket. On the AMD side the 7850 / 270x are around the same performance bracket.

What resolution are you trying to max out?

Also check out this bench comparison tool an anandtech

My native resolution is 1280x1024. I looked for a GTX 660 on SlickDeals.net, but they're all way out of my price range, $200 and higher. Just wondering, is there a reason you don't recommend NewEgg for a GPU?

Slickdeals is a site where deals are posted, not where you actually buy from. You might find a deal on a GPU that links to Amazon, Bestbuy, Frys, Newegg or any other place you can think of. Also, [H]ot|DEALS is a section of the forum, just thought I should clarify that so you don't go looking for someplace called hotdeals.com XD

Anywho, I second the 750ti. Nice and cool card that would do just fine in a smaller case.

@JL6speed: lol... I know, I know. It's pretty bad but a new GPU takes priority over a monitor, for now at least.

@Oniigumo: I realized that after posting, thanks for the clarification though. I looked at the 750ti but it seems out of my price range as well. I found one that was for $90 but, of course, that deal had expired. The rest are too high, price-wise. I'll keep looking though and hopefully I'll find a good deal eventually.

$200 is way too much for that. I have seen GTX 760 on sale for $200.

The thing with the deal sites is you need a little bit of time to catch a good deal. If you can wait a while you will get a good deal.

I have seen 7850 for about $100 and R9 270 for $140. A GTX 660 for $125 would also be a good deal. All depends on whether you can wait for a decent deal. That might be later today, tomorrow or next week...

What is your budget?

$125 maximum, preferably less though.

Does it have to be new?

I don't mind a used one as long as it's fully functional, the only problem with used though is that you don't know just how used/abused it is until it's too late. Sure, I might find a GPU for $50 that way, but then it might die a month later because it was OC'd to oblivion or run at high temps for extended periods of time without proper cooling... who knows.

750 ti fits your budget. This one is currently priced at $119.99 after rebate.

Hmm... the only thing worrying me about these particular cards is their size. The card I have now takes up a lot of room and it's just one slot. These take up two slots.

That's why you buy a used one with a transferable warranty. EVGA, XFX, Gigabyte, Asus, & MSI.

750ti is also a solid option if you want new.

I agree it can be a lottery but if you are willing to play that game there are 7950's all over ebay for less than $130. Granted its used and granted your monitor rez is low per se but there isn't a better bang for buck than that right now. Plus you'd be ready for when you eventually do step that monitor up to something higher rez like a 1920x1080/1200.
Heck every once in awhile you'll see a 7970 going for less than $150. You're a little light in the cpu for the 79xx cards but the point remains the same.

What are your thoughts on actually fitting one of these cards into my case? I have this case, the only difference is mine has green lighting.

Based on the pics I saw at NE it appears you have a inch to an inch and half past your mobo. Best thing to do is just measure it yourself. A 7950 is generally about 10.5" long, that probably would fit but it would be tight in there real tight. A lesser card surely would be. Something like a 7850 is only like 9" long. Given the cpu limitation you have that might be the best route to go for you. Less than $100 for sure if you get one from ebay.

2GB is a crime these days. Double that (AT LEAST) and go with a 750ti.

That's about the best you can expect from such an old rig etc.

I ran a q6600 with a 6970 for awhile. They are a fine pair and it will almost double your performance for 100$ do it!! :)

i would also recommend considering an R9 270. it is a bit faster than the 6970, but also much more power efficient, saving you money in the long run. i saw them going for ~$110 in FS/FT, so only $10 more than what people are charging for 6970s. many AMD cards have been used for mining though so you would have to ask the seller how long they had it, if they mined on it, warranty status, etc. the nice thing about buying on [H] is that it's a community so people are honest and often even willing to help with RMAs. you would be hard pressed to get any warranty on a 6970 since theyre pretty old now, but any R9 270 you find now would have a warranty for a good while still.

EDIT: i just bought a 280X on here last week for $175 and it whoops the ass of my old 5870, and the seller bought it in November '13, never mined on it, and is willing to help with RMA if i ever need it (powercolor isnt transferrable). plus it has 3GB ram instead of 1GB. just to show that you can get a lot of performance for your money right now with a newish R9 2X0, no need to settle for a 4-year-old card. :)
