GPU ambient higher then GPU

Ok, so after finally getting around to installing my Maze4 GPU block, I almost pissed my self. After screwing around so long I really had to pee by the time it came to booting up the comp. And when I opened my temp guage, it's now giving me 30*C, ya that's a 20* temp drop for air cooled.

But anyway, my question is, why does my GPU ambient temp read 6*C higher then the GPU temp in Everest Home Edition? What exactly does it measure for the ambiant temps in the x800 Pro? Is it something I should be conserned with as far as condinsation?
 
i dont think u have anything to worry about - it's just the capacitors on board are heating up. Condensation - I really dont think so but who knows :)
 
There are a number of reasons for this, if your rad is taking air from an intake or it's external rather than mounted exhausting chassis air over the rad your water can be at a lower temp than the chassis temp! Add in the potential loss of airflow of the graphics card PCB etc. you end up with the GPU cooler than the diode/thermister that is used for ambient temps. I with one project ended up with my CPU consistently 2C to 5C lower than chassis temps, I had the rad sat in front of an AC unit.

Ya, I have my rad mounted exteranally on top of my case. It's not getting any air from the in chasis at all. So is this a bad thing that the GPU ambient temps are higher?
 
The biggest and most likely reason for this is the fact that the thermistors used for these sensors usually have a range of +-5C error. That means that the GPU core temp could be higher than the GPU ambient temp, just that the GPU core thermistor is giving a much lower reading than it should and the GPU ambient thermistor is giving a much higher temperature than it should.

This is the reason why temps given from thermistors are not to be trusted, only used as a very rough guide.

nope, not at all, as long as temps don't get low enough to reach dew point ;)
 
So if I "borrowed" a laser thermomoter thingy from work, where should I take readings from to make sure they are correct. Obviously I can't take a core reading with that, but what other temps would be good to take?

lol, it's been done..... It's really not as bad as a normal laser..... The average eye temps is around 85*F. It get's boring at a grocery store when we're slow, lol.
