GPU 8 pin power question

My buddy's GPU has two 8-pin power connections, but his PSU only has 1x8-pin and 1x6-pin connections. I know for a fact that the extra two on there are GROUNDS.

My question is, does he absolutely need to have the extra two connections there? Would he lose anything or not be able to provide his GPU the "extra" power it needs?
