My boss just dropped off his laptop saying he's getting popups and home page hijacks after connecting to a hotel's wireless network a couple days ago. I'm doing the standard scans and such, but i need to update some of the spyware definitions for some programs, and i don't want to connect the laptop to our main network. If i plug a router into our network and plug the laptop into that, would that prevent any malicious programs from jumping to other computers? Our Comcast gateway is assigning IPs in the 10.1.10.x range, while the router would be assigning 192.168.1.x.

put a firewall on it, that should at minimum allow you to see whats trying to connect to the outside.

Norton Internet Security is on there right now, and i don't see anything in the logs that looks suspicious.

Most if not all of those programs should allow you to download the file you need and transfer it to the infected machine.

The SOHO routers (Linksys, Dlink, etc..) do nothing to stop internal problem from going external.
