Im thinking of getting this, came back from the west with dissapointing pictures, being that i had to use higher iso to stabilize my pics from my rebel xti and sigma 70-300, im thinking tripod would help, but maybe i dont need a full on thing? so im thinking a gorilla pod slr zoom.. advice plz?

I have one and it is ok....but I also didn't have high expectations of it when I bought it.

Pros: best thing about it is the ability for it to cling to round objects such as pipes and etc. Also you can bend the leg into a big hook to hang it from something.

Cons: not that stable, relatively heavy and big, and broke once because ball worked its way out of the socket when I bent one of the legs too much in one direction. I hammered it back in though and put a little bit of oil on the top joint so that it would be easier to bend and won't just bend out of it's socket again. Also it is kind of slow to set up because of how flexible the legs are. I would suggest keeping IS on while using it because I'm sure the mirror slap on it effects sharpness of the picture.

so im guessing since i dont have a real tripod to begin with i should start with tripod THEN get gorillapod tosupplement?

Yeah, there's no way I'd trust my dlsr to one of those things. Even with a lighter lens, it would bend around a lot, and probably not give you enough stability for long exposure night-shots. With a heavier lens like a 70-300mm there's no way you would get the stability you want.

As far as I can tell, these things are made for amature snap-shot people so they can get all of their family in one shot and not have to have a person holding the camera. Don't expect it to enable long exposures just because it is "a tripod".

There are plenty of inexpensive tripods out there that would do what you need just fine. You should get some good suggestions here.

yea, if anyone couldrecommend me some good tripods, preferable under or around 100, too low price? comments plz, im new to this

The one I'm using is a Quantaray – was only like $80 at Wolf, so you can probably get it cheaper online. Can't remember the model, but it's one of their larger ones - goes up to around 72" and has a nice wide spread - has a monopod built into the center that you can pull out and use separately if needed, but I’ve never actually tried that feature out. It's fairly light-weight but pretty solid – I attached a strap to it so I can haul it around while hiking etc.

Only major cons so far: the mounting head of it is starting to leave a lot to be desired - it slips a bit with heavier lenses like my 70-300 at certain angles. And the locking block-thing that screws onto the camera doesn’t seem too sturdy.

I'm planning on waiting 'till I completely wear this one out before I look to upgrade, which may or may-not take much longer; the main thing is, I'm reasonably certain it won't take my camera with it when it "goes". For a starter model I think it's pretty decent.

They do make several different models of the Gorilla pod and they make a super duty one now for longer telephoto pics. They are supposedly much sturdier than the original gorillapod. I have one of the earlier versions and like it very much, although I don't know if I would ever hang any high dollar glass from something like it. It may hold fine but I am not going to risk busting a 70-200 2.8 hanging the gorillapod around a tree limb.

But for other unstable tripod uses it is a good small solution. I still recommend one.

right, i had the same thought as you, and although my lens arent super ridiculously expensive, they are expensive enough that i dont want them to fall b ecause im fucking around with a twisty tripod
