Google is clearly not satisfied with the changes that Microsoft agreed to make on the desktop search features of Vista. Several outlets are reporting that they have asked for even more modifications.

"The remedies won by the Department of Justice and state attorneys general from Microsoft are a positive step, but consumers will likely need further measures to ensure meaningful choice," David Drummond, Google's chief legal officer, said in an e-mailed statement. "Ultimately, these issues raise the need for continued judicial oversight of Microsoft's practices, to ensure that consumers' interests are best served."

what a bunch of whiners. Honestly quit the bitchin. So microsoft has a desktop search, its not this AMAZING technology or anything. IDIOTS!

Go **** yourself Google.

This has nothing to do with consumers, it has to do with them wanting to infect millions of computers with their spyware so they know what kind of files people have on their computer. Theres NOTHING they could add to the default Vista search since it already does the job, they could only make it worse. I dont know why MS is allowing this, this just gurantees that Vista will become insanely insecure because now the people even worse than google will beable to have full control over explorer.exe and beable to sell whatever they find on your HDD.

Nicely said!

I think the consumer is best served by not being forced to install a (probably critical) update to their operating system just to pacify one corporations skewed view of "consumer rights".

Does anyone else get the impression that many of Windows "limitations," when compared to other OSes, are due to third party bitching? Frankly, it is just a sodding search function and I see no reason to install an extra app.

As for whinging about Search in the Start Menu and certain right-click windows: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I am sitting on a W2K machine right now that has both of those features. It's been a while, but I think even W98 had those features. Google just needs to shut the hell up about this.

At the rate Google is growing they better watch out because others will be saying the same about them soon. If Google was truly concerned about consumer rights they would go after MS and Apple. Funny how one of those is missing....

Again just more Google bitching!

Microsoft should be able to do what ever they please with there products. If google doesn't like that then they should promote a company that supports them. The EU started this mess and I hope MS puts there foot down before they get completely walked all over.

I haven't used vista search, but it seems to me like there could easily be features that a 3rd party might add that MS wouldn't. Thus, it is better for the consumer if they can choose a 3rd party search software without having it damper performance.

Why should desktop search be treated any different than internet browsers with regards to anticompetitive behavior? And for those that think google is so awful, please cite some examples of anticompetitive behavior by google.

I don't have any problem with 3rd party apps, but the problem i see, and maybe I'm being naive here, is that instead of figuring out how to get things to work themselves and letting their product sell itself. There are probably a lot of variables I'm not seeing here, but it just seems to me that there have been a lot of other 3rd party apps that mop the floor with MS provided apps, without having to file a complaint about it in court. I think MS should protect their bottom line and secure their OS. If Google thinks that Microsoft is being unfair, then they should just offer their software somewhere else (ie. Mac and Linux) and be done.

I personally don't like Google Desktop as I feel it uses more resources that it's worth. But that's just me.

Because if we start going down this road, pretty much every single portion of Windows will need to accessible to third parties for modification. What's next? The explorer shell needing to be opened up and completely replacable by third parties? I don't like their TCP/IP stack--should I be able to demand that they make it removable so I can create my own implementation?

If you are going to make the slippery slope argument let's go back to letting MS manipulate APIs to kill off 3rd party browsers.

Yeah I'm just about sick of this as well. Google had plenty of time to work with the beta's to make sure their product performed the way it should have.

I'm not a MS fanboy, but I am getting quite sick of them becoming the target for other businesses that can't get their crap together.

HEY GOOGLE! If you want your desktop search on every OS why don't you invest the time and money into your own OS!
