For those of you that have not seen this yet, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said last week that he is currently working on a community developed web search service that will rival Google and Yahoo. Wow, talk about aiming high.

Wales told a conference of software developers in Portland, Oregon, that his commercial start-up, Wikia, has acquired Grub, a pioneering Web crawler that will enable Wikia's forthcoming search service to scour the Web to index relevant sites.

google is the lesser of the two evils here

in wikipedia
a misspelling could lead to a lot of errors and no return searches

Wikipeida's search is so astoundingly bad that I had to laugh when I read this thread.

wow damn, the negativity on wikipedia has caught me by surprise. Kind of like when the tourettes guy gets asked if he's wearing a mickey mouse shirt. Just tit dirt.. anyway.

What am I missing here?

Have you ever used Wikipedia's search? Unless you get the exact wording of the article title it returns jack-shit.

I use Wikipedia often and haven't had problems with the search. I've sometimes been impressed with its interpretation of my misspellings.
But keep in mind the search function in Wikipedia is not wiki (correct me if I'm wrong), it's the information. This new search engine will be wiki, so it should be interesting nonetheless.

If you told someone in the 90's that a user-edited encyclopedia would beat Encyclopedia Brittanica in popularity, I'll bet they would have laughed.

Besides if I go to a friends computer and I want to do a search, it's easier to type in Google in the address bar. I don't even know how to spell the other on without looking it up on Google.

If Google removed Wikipedia from its search cache or even just off the front page of any searches Wikipedia traffic would drop at least 80%....hahah

This guy doesn't aim high, he aims stupid:rolleyes:

i don't trust google as much as you guys do.... i wouldn't mind seeing someone challenge google..

neither do i, not even a little... but i would trust google before nazipedia

I'm surprised so many posters dislike Wikipedia. I almost use it as much as I do Google. Sometimes I use Clusty.

I don't think Wikipedia has a cats chance. This whole community editing does have it's flaws... and I think wikipedia will find out the real flaws when they do a search engine, especially when companies will pay to have people sit there and edit/delete competitor search results... or just "misspell" them.

Google will gobble these chumps up. If google and yahoo wanted, they could clear wikipedia out today, so I don't really see the threat. Heck, google and yahoo should enter discussions, I bet neither of them likes this idea.

Man, I would expect a forum mostly concerned with user modification to like a website that allows user modification.

I personally think Wikipedia is a great idea. Sorry, but for most things, you won't find a more comprehensive set of information than Wikipedia. Yeah, if the data is really important, you'll have to check it against something else, but for most casual cases, trusting Wikipedia is fine. The search works great for me, too. I am sometimes amazed at how I can type a very obscure item into the box and be taken to several pages of information about it.

Google is great too. They provide excellent utilities for free; something most companies do not do.

I don't think a "lesser of two evils" comparsion is in order here. It is more like a "greater of two goods" comparison.

Oh, and how can you compain about two services that are completely free? I can understand compaints about a company like Microsoft or Best Buy, but how can you compain about a free search engine and a free information database?

Wikipedia is a great idea... but the community over there is pretty vicious... "editors" will delete anything on a whim becuase they dont like it, even peoples profiles... i have no respect for those people seriousy...

i use it more as an "index" of topics that link to other sources and is usually useful, but if i need to be sure of something i will most definately not trust anything on that site...

and god forbid you try and contribute to wikipedia...
