Hey guys, I am currently using a nice viewsonic crt right now, but I think it is time for me to move onto an LCD screen.

Anyways, I have about $200 to spend, but PREFER to spend less. Since LCD screens dramatically went down in price, it is time.

Anyways, I am a hardcore FPS gamer, so keep that in mind. I have no idea about the 8ms 12ms 5 ms thing, lower = faster correct?

At newegg, or anywhere else that accepts paypal, please recommend me a nice monitor, I dont care if it is black or silver, just want good performance for the money.

My system is in my sig, well the main part is the X1900XT 512mb.

Anyways, I am looking at a 19incher, there are so many, is there ONE special one that is the most bang for the buck? Thanks

you can get a nice 19" ws

for like 80 or 100 more you can get a nice 20.1"ws lcd

yeah haha I know, but there's so many, and I am guessing there isn't a best bang for your buck lcd for under $200.

I don't know that our definition of 'hardcore' FPS gamer is the same, but if you are a serious FPS gamer (actually compete in tournaments for money), then don't touch an LCD. Input lag and ghosting/blurring is present to some small degree on all LCD monitors.

I play a lot of FPS games, but I am not a hardcore FPS gamer. I avoid LCD's in FPS games because they can not display dark areas anywhere near as well as a CRT. Also, viewing angles can be a serious issue on VA panels, so definately avoid those.

OK nvm I am not as hardcore as I thought I was haha.

How about I do a lot of FPS gaming for enjoyment and compete in CAL for CS:S? :)

Honestly, when I compared these two monitors side by side, I couldn't discern much of a difference in image quality:

Tom's Hardware gave the VX922 good reviews:

And PC Magazine gave the VA912b an equally solid rating:

Just some food for thought. :)

The only game i really play right now is the fear combat game, but i just got the $100 AR Hanns G 19 inch 8ms from pc connections, and it works great. My 6600GT only allows me to run the native res of the monitor (1100somethingx800something), but at that res the screen looks awesome and i don't get any ghosting.

For <$200 you should stick with your CRT.
I agree with this...my experience with sub $200 lcd's almost drove me back to my old crt.

well my crt isn't exactly high end either, it was one of the budget models that I paid $200 for a few years back, like 3 maybe.

It is the Viewsonic A90f+ 19inch.

The reason I want a lcd is that I can possibly move the monitor back against the edge of the desk so my eyes are farther away from the monitor, it's smaller, and have more deskroom.

But if these lcd's in the low range are not worth it, I guess I'll stick to my crt, even though it's not exactly high end.

Bah I want an LCD again... widescreen this time... time to do some research.

i would stay away from 19" 4:3 screens... reason being that they have the exact same reso as a 17"... IMO you either get a 17 or a 20, 19" and its bigger ditpitch is a waste, especially for the money.

'course, i would love to have 16x12 on a 14" laptop screen... <3 dense reso screens. I like using my laptop more than my desktop for that reason alone (although its not the only reason)

OK, well just found out that widescreen gives the player more FOV, in CS:S which I play a lot of... guess widescreen here I come......

the solution to your problem...... the Samsung 940BW. It is an excellent 19" widescreen monitor with a 4ms response. Here is a thread I started about it, http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1067655 if you go through a few pages you will see what people, including myself have thought about it. You can usually pick one up on sale for 200 bucks or so, so keep a lookout in your sunday ads.

I play only CS:S, and this monitor rocks for this game. I play CS:S way too much, prolly not healthy for me :( . I have not noticed any lag with the 940bw and it has only increased my kill:death ratio (i blame countless hours of playing and the increased FOV for this) :D

Me personally, the smallest widescreen LCD I'd consider is a 22" model. The 20.1" widescreen's only have the same viewable height as a 17" 4:3 LCD. I tried one and thought it was too small in viewable height. You can get a 22" LCD for about $300 now at Costco or about $345 at Newegg.

UPPPPPP still looking, now specifically the Benq in the hot deals and the dell 207.

This is wrong, unless you have at least a 24" display. 1680x1050 gives you 5% more horizontal FOV and 14% less vertical FOV than a 1600x1200 monitor. Additionally, non-widescreen monitors actually have a slightly larger area than widescreen monitors of the same advertised size.

A 24" monitor with a res of 1900x1200 gives you around 18% more horizontal FOV over 1600x1200. This is nice, but only because there are no non-widescreen 24" models.
