good small bookshelf speakers?

Anyway, I just remembered about a company called Fluance. They make some pretty decent speakers for an almost UNBELIEVABLE price. For your budget of $200, you will be VERY surprised what you can get.

Look here and tell me you're not impressed by the prices. I know several people who bought from Fluance and it has been a great experience for them.
http://www.fluance.com/

I am not impressed by the prices. :D

Seriously........ their stuff sells on Ebay every day for lower prices then their site offers.
But you can add me to that list of people that have bought stuff from them if you wish. ;)

Thanks for everyone's help, especially Pinipig523 and BossNoodleKaboodle. I'm hoping to get my stuff soon, just gotta check my moneys and maybe save a little more.

Edit: Yep, I've been Ebay scrounging no doubt. Might shoot for a Polk PSW202 and maybe something up on the Polk bookshelf line if I can score some good ebay deals. :D

Dont bother with that particular Velodyne though, the Dayton will mop it.

Hmm, is it really that much better? I'm planning on buying another sub for my other system, I suppose I could get a dayton and put the velodyne on that system :D

What's your budget on a new sub?

A lot of people have bought, used, and abused the Daytons. For the price, you can even get a pair and you could be rolling in infrasonic frequencies all day long! I am pretty sure the Dayton outguns the Velodyne. The Dayton hits 25hz with no problem while the Velodyne VX10 ONLY hits down to about 36hz... 36hz!!! A multimedia sub can go lower than that!

Hey B,
I think he wants to stay around the $100 range. I suggested the Dayton... what do you think of it?

FYI, B knows audio, his set surpasses mine... take his advice if he offers. BTW, hope you had fun at the Onix Chicago Meet!

Sometimes I regret using my old UT handle, the fancy M really throws people :D The name's BOMBZ =]

Anyways, I checked out the Dayton 10incher, and for the money, it doesn't seem to bad. The enclosure is decently sized and heavy, so there should be at least some bracing in there.

10inch drivers can certainly move some air, so I wouldn't worry too much about that; I was at a get-together in Chicago, and somebody had brought a Velodyne DD10, a little 10inch guy. Also, on the other side of the room sat a DD18, a massive, 100lb, ~inch cube with an 18" driver. They were at the time listening to some music at a reasonably high level, ~90dB, and at first I thought it the Velo DD18 was doing the bass, but it turns out it was the little DD10 doing the work =] Of course, when we were playing Kill Bill with the 18incher, it showed that it can hit a hell of a lot more solidly low down.

That enclosure also is ported, which should give you a milder roll-off at the tuning point [25hz, not bad at all for the price]

I can't say I've seen any reviews of this guy, but it seems that it should at least be decently loud and have some good sound quality [that's where a review would help clear it up, or at least some ground plane @ 2m FR and THD tests]

Pinipig, you at least might find this interesting: At the gettogether, somebody had brought over their set of Reference3's [4500$], Onix CD1 [1500$] and 120w Onix a120 amp. That system I spent the most amount of time listening to, and was truly phenominal. The guy whose system it was had also invested [wasted might be a better term here =] at least 2500$ in cabling. The speaker wires were about 1" diameter, locking RCA's on the interconnects, and hospital grade plugs on the power cords. Impressive looking for sure.. but I could think of much better use for all that cash.

WOW! I've always wanted to hear the Onix Reference 3s!! I wanted to go to the Chicago Meet but I have finals in two weeks and medical school waits for no one... :( . Wow... so how does the Ref3 compare to your Ref2?

Also, $2500 in cabling and interconnects?? Wowow! That is pretty nuts! I dont think I'd ever think about spending that much unless I really had money to burn! LOL... His interconnects alone cost just a wee-bit less than my entire system! :D

So, like I asked earlier... give a little report on the how the Ref3s compare to your Ref2s. I am seriously looking at the Ref2/Ref1 combo as a possible upgrade path for me. Not trying to copy you or anything.. hehehehe  .

I can probably go up to about $250~300 this time around. I bought the velodyne VX10 cuz it was cheap and thought thought it was OK enough. I've heard good things about the JBLs in that price range but would like to hear your guys' suggestions as well. :)

Hey, what's the word on Polk subwoofers? Specifically the PSW202. I've been seeing these for about the same price as the Dayton.

I think I was the only one at the GTG who actually had Ref2's, so I got asked the question a lot anyways =]

It seems to me that the Ref2's give you about 70% of the Ref3's. The 3's have a good amount more bass, for one thing. That is one area where they really shine, but if you are running a home theater, I'd still probably be running them as small, or crossed over at 40hz if you can adjust your xover. For two-channel only, they would probably outshine the Ref2's by a decent margin.

The highs on the 3's also were a bit clearer, but this was a pretty close call, so if you went with Ref2's, you're really not losing much here.

The difference that I first noticed, and is certainly the most prominent, is the imaging. The 3's did a superlative job of projecting sound in space. Mind you, the ref2's are no slouch, but the 3's really beat them out in this area. It seemed as if you could put a whiteboard between them and draw a bullseye at the center of where each sound comes from. Mind you, these were just set up in the guy's living room, with massive openings on all sides, so they could be a lot nicer in a real room.

While I'm not unbiased or anything, I think that the Reference line, all of them, are great. The Ref2's are great floorstanders, and with them being discontinued, it might be possible to pick them up cheaper. I know at least there's a Bstock pair in Piano black for only 1400$, which is a great deal. I got mine Bstock for 1600, and after getting them set up, I literally did not think of the price again, they are that good. I definitely like the Ref's more than the Rockets. Although I didn't get to play any of my music on the RS1000's that were in the HT downstairs, I didn't come off as too impressed. They have a lot of slam to them with all those midrange drivers and the powered 8" woofer, but I felt that my Ref2's surpass them for sound quality without much effort. For HT usage, where you really need a lot of OOMPH, they faired very well, but I've listened to movies at a really loud level on my Ref2's and not run into any trouble there either.

Anyways, I'd say definitely go with the Ref series, you won't regret it =] I've bought all mine Bstock, just by checking the Bstock page a couple times a day [I'm a little OCD about my forums :D ]

Haven't ever heard this one either, but looking at the basic info, you would get a lot more for your dollar with the Dayton sub. The Polk is significantly lighter-weight, has a frequency response down to 40hz vs 25hz, and a smaller amp. I'd say stick to the Dayton.

I poked around on the JBL website, but I couldn't find any subs there for less than 400$, and at that price, it would be a much better bet to get the baby SVS, the PB10-ISD. If you have a link to the specific sub you were thinking of, I'd be glad to take a look at it =]

Anyone who is interested in getting speakers/subs should definitely check out the various For Sale boards on the audio forums. Good places to look would be:

www.hometheaterforum.com - Their FS/FT board constantly has subs popping up on it
www.audiogon.com - The ebay of home audio
www.videogon.com - Audiogon's HT brother
www.av123.com - check their Bstock page, under products
www.ebay.com - Everyone should know this one, but I'd look here last.

Ah, I was referring to the E150 and 250 from JBL. I know the MSRP is quite a bit more, but I've been able to find em online for $199 and $299 respectively. I've been looking at that PB10-ISD from SVS as well and am seriously considering holding out until I can get the funds for one as it seems to be highly regarded.

man, it looks like my reciever + 2 speaks is going to be too expensive for me :(

so back to computer speakers.

can anyone reccommend me some good 2.1's with a really good midrange? I hate it when the subwoofer takes over the midrange because the tinny satellites can't play in the lower areas... monsoon planarmedia's maybe?

Whats the absolute max you can spend? Look at Event TR-5's, which can be had for about $250. They're exceptionally good for computer use, and trounce all the Logitech and Klipsch PC speakers.

hmmm, I was looking at around $100 or so. but that can vary depending on whether an extra 20-50 will be leaps and bounds ahead. BTW, that's used price or [H] F/s price :)

I was looking at the altec mx5021's, i hear the klipsch 2.1's are lacking in midrange.

even better I heard of Acoustic Energy AEGO2's, but I can't find them here in the states because they seem to be UK only.

I also found the videologic sirocco spirit 2.0's which i hear are pretty good, yet i can't find those either!

I went to best buy and the guy recommended some bose mediamate 2.0's..... but their store model just "happened" to be broken.

I'll check the salvation army store next to school to see if there are any old recievers laying around. GAH my dad donated his old reviever (about '82) to the salvation army :(, then maybe bookshelfs could be an option, but i doubt it.

Also check your local Craigslist. Used stereo receivers regularly sell on the DC list for $20-30.

Thanks for the craiglist info. I didn't know that existed :) Found a KLH reciever for pretty cheap, hopefully he takes my offer.

So then are there any good bookshelfs for about 60 for the pair or maybe 80 for the pair?

Not really. Maybe used. If you can bump to $150, then I can think of some, but $80 is really pushing it.

Yea, even 80$ probably won't buy you even decent used speakers, unless you find some really great deal. GMC, I've got a small idea what you are thinking of in the ~150$ range =]

well, ok, hopefully the reciever i can get for $40.

so then maybe $120 for pair? that going to get me anything good? gotta fit on my desk tho.
