I'm planning on doing a little upgrading to my computer as I have a bit of extra cash laying around. The good people on these forums have convinced my that purchasing an SSD is well worth the money so I will go ahead and purchase an SSD for sure. But, I am also considering buying a new CPU and motherboard with hopes of overclocking in mind...
For some reason I am really looking at the AMD FX 8350 CPU as I would like to stick with an AMD processor, and I notice it comes out of the box at 4.0GHz which is very nice. What are your thoughts on the CPU? Also I have noticed some listing for the chip that say 4.0(4.2 Turbo) what exactly is the whole 4.2 turbo about...
If I decided on this chip (AMD FX 8350) I would absolutely like to do some over clocking and that is why I think I will be needing a new motherboard as well, a motherboard that will allow for easy over clocking (for instance the mobo I have now...people are saying it doesn't have "direct vrm cooling" etc.

So to break this down, I am thinking of purchasing a new CPU/Motherboard that will allow for easy upgrading..what are your thoughts on the 8350 and what would you recommend as a CPU/mobo combination?
Also, would you recommend buying the CM Hyper 212 for this processor as I'd like to do some OC'ing or something else? Stock?

Thanks so much!

Current Setup is below:
Ram: g.Skill Ripjaws 8gb
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2
Motherboard: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3
Power: 600W OCZ
Case: MidTower
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 460

I have an 8320 and an Asus Sabertooth R2.0 and I'm happy with both. I had a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 first and it was horrible.

I'm sure the Sabertooth is a great board, but I haven't had any problems with my 990FXA-UD3. Admittedly I haven't gone crazy with it, but I have absolutely no problems running my 8120 @ 4.3GHz (38.7% overclock). I like the board, it's fine if you don't need anything special and it's also on the cheap side for a 990FX based board.

The UD3 would have been great, except the new Revision 3.0 with UEFI is missing just about all important BIOS options for running an FX series CPU, the most critical of which is APM. It was throttling my 8320 to 2.9ghz at stock settings. Gigabyte couldn't say if a new version would come out to fix that any time soon so I returned it and got the Sabertooth, for $40 more its worth it to be able to even run my CPU at stock let alone overclock it.

oh wait that is the same one as LigTasm posted so yeah good with that one must make sure you get the rev.2 one.

It seems like it just got quietly released, there are a few reports of throttling on OCN in the gigabyte 990FX-UD3/5/7 owners thread now that people are picking them up. It does not seem to have a problem with Athlon/Phenom CPU's, only the FX series.

Is there a list of which motherboards are ready for AM3+ Bulldozers or Visheras right out of the box?

Throttling it because of a bios bug or heat?

BIOS bug. They upgraded to UEFI and apparently forgot a lot of things. Supposedly there is a workaround to shut off all power saving features and turn on HPC mode now with the latest FB BIOS. However, it sounds kind of half-baked. I haven't tried it because I already returned the board.

I believe that GigaByte released a BIOS update last month, but it said it was only to fix DDR compatibility and onboard RAID. I just got the UD3 board and am waiting for a non-dead video card to arrive so I can update the BIOS. While I was using a loaner video card I didn't see any issues in the BIOS with my 8350. We'll see once I dig in a little more.

late to the party, but i have a 8350 and paired it with a Biostar TA990FXE motherboard, i am VERY happy with it and have had no problems at all.

I have heard some of their boards are pretty nice. I'm liking my Sabertooth R2.0, with some additional VRM cooling I am able to run my 8320 at 5.0ghz 24/7 with 1.565V.
