I'm looking for a LCD with much better then the current LCD I have now (dell 2407WFP-HC). I was never happy with the darker shades. Comparing it to a LCD HDTV a completely black screen on my monitor looks gray. Recently it's been getting some pretty bad flash lighting near the upper right corner of the screen... It's time I grab a replacement for my main rig and move this screen to work or something that's not as demanding graphic wise.

Primary uses will be web browsing, photoshop, watching movies and light gaming.
Size wise 24-30
Price under 500.

I already know TN is not the panel tech I'd be looking for. I believe IPS was the best last time I looked into monitors. but it's been 3 or so years since I've looked into monitors.

Thanks in advance!

If you are after blacks comparable to your TV you will want to look at VA panels not IPS panels. IPS panels aren't actually better then TNs in this area even.

If gaming and response time is not a strong concern for you, you will want to avoid TNs like you said, and focus on VA and IPS panels.

Although IPS screens are the most expensive, I wouldn't say they are the best. Although without a doubt IPS screens have many good qualities, they also do have trade offs, like all the current display types.

His current monitor is VA. His TV is probably just using dynamic contrast on Dark screens. Most TVs are setup like that out of the box.

Generally VA panels have the highest measured contrast so for a given brightness level, should have the darkest blacks. Considering he is unhappy with his current VA, he will need to stick with some newer, higher contrast VAs, perhaps with Dynamic Contrast.

Samsung f2380mx has over a 3,000:1 static contrast at 120cdm2. I believe the fujitsu p22w eco IPS has a 1300:1 contrast as does the dell 2709 and 2408 revision according to prad.de and digital versus.

There is also the ezio ev233 but it can only be purchased in europe and the f2380mx can only be purchased in canada

That's def good info. I'll keep my eyes peeled for VA and maybe IPS. I already knew that I wasn't going to touch a TN panel.

Actually no, Dynamic contrast is off on my TV by the calibrator. I lost a lot of shadow detail with that feature on. Even with local dimming off and DC off the C:R is much better on the TV then on my 3 y/o monitor... sometimes it's sad that tech advances soo quickly :(

Awwww man don't tease me with things I can't get in the US :p

Please also note guys that the monitor will be used for photo editing, so its gotta be able to have really good color detail. I'm like super picky when it comes to color detail. I guess to get my priorities in line I would say that color correctness would be #1 with C:R being a close #2.

I guess finding a refurb or used 2408/2709 are your only options then, unless you want to drive down to Canada for the F2380MX

Contrast ratio on the U2410 is pathetic for such an expensive monitor (around 600:1 once calibrated) compared to your average TN (800:1), blacks will be grey, it's definately not what you are looking for. The U2311 however has a much better contras ratio.

Yeah I'm reading and learning about that 2311 now. seems to be more what I'm going for. The 2410 seems to be pretty much the same as my current monitor, maybe worse
