What's a good card which will have excellent desktop performance and TV Out signal quality under Linux? Games are not a priority, $100 is the absolute budget limit.

I'm thinking something like this, this, or this.

If all you want is something like Compiz and TV out, then something low end like a used 8600GT, 9500GT, 3450, or 4650 are more than enough. They should all have comparable TV out quality, so I wouldn't worry about that. But really I would just go for something modern-ish that is cheap - that will be your best choice.

Check out http://www.phoronix.com/ for some benchmarks and such of various cards and drivers.

I had an 8500 that's in a machine at my parents' house that had really crappy TV-Out quality (at least under Vista) for such a (then) recent card. It seemed like its TV-Out capabilities (overscan control, etc) were nerfed in a driver update.

I was hoping for someone with hands-on experience with one of these cards...

I have always had better success with nvidia cards under linux (could be based on the fact that ati linux driver support is fairly new). The 9600GT will be plenty. Are you going to an HD-TV via HDMI/DVI or are you using S-Video to an older tv? I had my geforce 4200 working great on s-video out under ubuntu when it was my mythtv box.
