Hi, my brother and his wife are looking to buy a desktop pc. Right now all they have is a fairly old mid range laptop. They usually always buy top of the line stuff, but they just had a son so they are on a budget. They don't really game at all either. $600 including everything is a their target. Less would obviously be better. They aren't too computer so something with a decent warranty and good software bundle with everything ready to go would be good. A good printer, monitor (maybe flat panel) will do. I was thinking a P4, definately not a celeron and probably not an Athlon since they don't game. A CDRW/DVD would be nice. They don't want me to build one and don't want to buy used. I told them to check out the Dell Dimension 4700 refurbs, but does anybody else have any other suggestions?

600 dollars is a pretty tight budget to get all that. (especially the flat panel). Looks like a dell is the only thing you can get for that kind of money since dell gives out *free* printers and flatpanels at times.
 
They don't know much about computers and just want to go out and buy something from a reputable company. I know Dell had optiplexes and dimension8400's for $300 a few days ago that were refurbished. Could you post a link to a good Dell deal.
 
For that price, make sure you get a machine with a PCI-e slot. Anything you pay $600 for will come with onboard graphics. If you aren't careful, you'll be screwed out of upgrading to a better graphics card later, as budget Dells often have PCI slots only and no PCI-e slot for graphics cards. Even an entry-level graphics card makes a decent difference in performance over integrated solutions, and not just for gaming.

While some people don't like them, I'd look at the HP Pavilion line as well. They use ASUS mainboards, and most of them have an AGP 8x or PCIe graphics card slot even though they come stock with onboard graphics. Plus, you can choose either P4 or Athlon 64 systems. They have a 120mm rear fan for good cooling, many of them have a multimedia card reader and a ton of features out of the box, and for a home system, they're quite expandable.

check out cyberpower PC and buy the athlon configured system i think its a 2800+ with a gf4 mx pcie card and 512 ram for $414 without shipping so around $475 then you have only 125 left to shop for a monitor you can get a 15 inch lcd shipped at new egg for $175 so that will put you roughly 50 over budget but will get what you want done :)
