Good 4" bookshelf?

Few ideas actually


first off if you can find them cheap locally Realistic Minimus 7 speakers

(here are my similar Optimus Pro-X44AV ..same size and cabinets but ported and sheilded) i paid $10 for these



u can generally find these on ebay ~$50ish these speakers sound very good for the size and cost (especially if you find them at a thrift or yard sale for $10~ish)


however leaving that aside

I own these (well older version made in USA ) NHT SuperZero's they cost $99ea new (so a bit over budget ...I got mine pair used in amazing condition for $50pr however).. these are some of my favorite small bookshelf speakers ever.. there are amazing ..but they don't attempt to go that low so you might find you need a sub with them) near-field depending on your test in music / preferences you might find you don't need one.

I also own these awesome little teac ls-mc80 speakers paid $5 for the pair, these haven't been made in some time like the Minimus 7 speakers so must be found used there are several pairs on ebay for $50~ + right now.
 
Thanks for the great suggestions!! I'll check them out. As for building my own, don't think I'll have the time or place to work on them.
 
The Pioneer Andrew Jones Designed bookshelf speakers have been getting some very strong reviews (pro and user) for price/performance. Their slightly older series is on sale at newegg.

just to chime in, i have the micca motion series MB42 paired with a lepai T-amp with a larger power brick, the speakers sound excellent for the price, although i am no audiophile. i wish the MB42X were out when i bought mine.
 
I would have mentioned something like the pioneers but even though they have small drivers the cabinets are not very small.
 
Pioneer's SP-BS21 are a bit smaller than the 41s. I've heard only the bigger model, and they're VERY good for the money.
