I've been finding a few of my games (FFXI, UT2K4, D3) that I play are kind of lacking in the FPS department as of late, and I'm looking for a semi-cheap upgrade to get me some extra frames.

My computer is pretty decent (P4 2.4C -> 3.4, 1GB RAM, etc) aside from the cyptic 4600 I've been keeping in there, which I'm looking to replace. Now a top of the line card, defined by me as 350$+, is completely out of the question. I'm planning to revamp my entire system in about 6 or so months, but I just need a lil something extra to tide me over. :)

I've been looking at 9800PROs, which I've been seeing new for 200$ and as low as 150$ used on the forums.. as well as 6800s, from around 270-300$. The 9800PRO is slightly more appealing at the moment sitting at that price range, but would I be missing out on any features by picking it up over a 6800? I definately intend to play games like HL2 (assuming it ever comes out :p), but I really can't justify paying 350$+ on an AGP card right now when I'll be moving to PCIe so soon.

Any suggestions that you could give would be greatly appreciated. :)
 
Get the 9800pro for the time being for it will allow you to play games very well and skip this new generation stuff like the 6800. You never know if ATI will release a card that kicks butt. Plus if pci-express takes off you don't want to have a 6800 holding you back from getting a new system that has pci-express and a way better video card availible for it.
 
I went from a Ti4600 to a 9800Pro back in the day. What I noticed was that I could run hella higher details with AA/AF over the Ti4600. It didn't magically increase my fps in all cases, but it certainly got me the graphics power I needed for the dx8.1 games of the day.

The 9800Pro is still a great card (I still have mine, aint selling it) and I think you would be more than happy with it as an upgrade.
 
I just did a Ti4600 to 5900XT. Only reason... I spent ~50bux. It wasn't that nice of an upgrade, but then again... I haven't installed Doom 3 yet.
 
awesome, thought about it some more and i'll probably start looking around FS threads for a 9800pro.. unless anyone else wants to post really quick and convince me otherwise. :)
