I have a Hercules Prophet II GTS (geforce2 GTS). I paid 419 bucks for it when It came out and until it dies, I won't get a new one. Now, I want to overclock it and the little dinky ramsinks/gpu hsf wernt cutting it. I took the ramsinks off a dead Prophet GF3 my friend had and took a pentium 233 cooler and glued it to my GPU. I didn't use any nice glue, i think it was actually plastic "super glue" It stays and all, and im wondering how much better ill be able to overclock with it now.
 
shouldnt have just glued it on...
and you should probly get at least 600mhz on the core easily.
 
you did WHAT?! you... used superglue... to glue heatsinks?... buy, did you f.ck up... that's why they have THERMAL EPOXY for things like that!

2: Why on earth would you want to overclock a GTS???

I know that that doesn't sound like something I'd normally say but really, let's be practicle here. Depending on what games you're playing you're going to see little to no difference from overclocking something that's that slow to begin with. Seeing as I'm playing all the newer games that are out there right now I DO overclock my hardware and I tend to see maybe SOME improvement in games and applications that I actually use. However, moving back to the situation you're in with YOUR hardware.....it's to the point that if a game is running 20 or 25 frames per second (I'm not assuming anything here or trying to be rude) it really doesn't make a difference. Seeing as I do not konw WHAT you're playing, I can't really back up what I'm saying in your specific case, I was just using that as an example.

Even though I'd probly try and overclock my GeForce2 MX400, that doesn't mean that there's really a reason to do it. If you're coming from my same mentality then fine, overclock it.....go right ahead. I'm just saying that if a person is coming from even a slightly practicle point of view.....they'd see that there's no reason to overclock certain things and that absolutely no gain will come of it.

Not to sound overly negative about it, but that's just the way things are.....like it or leave it.

Actually, if he's going to hang onto the card until it dies, I think it was actually a *good* idea to glue the heatsink on. Can anyone say 'new graphics card'? I knew that you could :D

Heh, that sounds like some lame mind trick I'd try and play on myself now that I think of it. Mess things up so bad that I HAVE to buy new hardware. ;) :p

Not even using liquid nitrogen he´ll ever get that speed from a GF2 core...not even from ram..

It's a waste of time overclocking that unfortunately. Would be fun if you found a volt mod somewhere :) My geforce 2 gts sits in the family computer. 0 3d games.
 
Hell, my brother/parents have got a Geforce3 Ti200 in their rig.....the same thing applies with that, and it's just not worth it.
 
I've got one (GF2 GTS) that's been vmodded. Both ram and gpu have the vmods...ramsinks, huge heatsink, 60mm fan, quadro hardmod...etc....

Had it up until 2 months ago when it finally died, one of the vr's on the board looks to have gotten a little toasty. Might be able to salvage it if I replaced the vr.

Too bad too...was saving for a 9800pro/xt and unfortunately at the time, a pro was still around $300 and all I had enough for was a 9600xt (which I promptly modded and overclocked :D )

running hardware at stock speeds is like kissing your sister...it's just something you don't do...

so, I say o/c the hell outta that card. who cares if it doesn't make a difference in games. Feed it so much juice with a good vmod that it warps itself into a fetal position in your case.

Heh, then it becomes more of a game and straight entertainment then anything else. :p Nothing wrong with that, just make sure you've got a backup. ;)
 
Dudes its a GF2, I don't play any of the new first person shooters, its just like warcraft, counterstrike, maybe some quake3. Nothing demanding... And does it look like I care if it dies? Its a geforce2... I dont plan on actually putting money into this thing, I just want to to go as fast as humanly possible. I wish i could try it, but my good computer died in peltier accident:(

Edit: Plus, why would I want to get this stuff off, the thing works, I know that, I just never got a chance to test it. And also, the ramsinks were just pryed off the gf3 and stuck on mine, I didnt glue to the ram. And the gpu, if i dont want it removed, and Its touching nothing bad, whats the problem?

I haven't actually tested the thermal conductivity of superglue but I'm guessing its no worse than no kind of material medium between the GPU - Heatsink. You might try running it for a few hours and probe the back of the GPU with your finger and see if it burns you or not. :p

However overclocking the core isn't going to gain you a whole lot (32bit color depth mostly) but you're still welcome to try if your cooling solution happens to work well. I'd set up an 80mm fan to push air over the cards ramsinks and overclock the memory as far as she'll go.

Should post some benches of your "ancient" Geforce2 GTS. :)
 
Well, I have seen a difference in games. When I had my athlon, playing NFS underground with full supported features required an overclock to get smoothe framerates. I just wanted to do it now to have fun. And my sister isnt home, maybe Ill go hook it up to her computer...

Edit: She is home, that bitch:(
