So I have been thinking about getting my VCP because i would really like to work with virtualization in my job/career but it seems that all those jobs require a VCP or like 5-7yrs experience.

Well I dont have the experience, but i understand most of the technology.
Im no VMware expert and i dont claim to be......yet;)

I have bought a book and I downloaded ESXi and am going to install it into VMware workstation so i can really learn it.

The only problem i foresee is the the VCP class that they make you take.
I cant take a week off from work to go to a VCP class during the day.

Is there a VCP class that would be offered across two weekends?

My current job is not very technical, and I dont really like it to much cause well.......its boring.
So I am kinda going for a career change, but I dont feel like getting fired in the process ya know.

Any insight would be appreciated.
 
The cost of the class specifically is why I don't have mine. These days training paid for by work is hard to come by, so this cert is outta my league.
 
Yup, the course is 3k. You could probably sign up for an online course that's offered in a time zone that makes it at night for you.

If you take the 3.5 course, then you need to get your 3.5 VCP before December to be eligible to just sit through the 4 exam.
 
No online courses offered - you have to prove attendance to get the cert.

Yea thats fine, im willing to pay that.
I mean ya its expensive but if it makes me marketable and gets doing something i like doing then its a good investment IMO.


I thought you could do online courses? I saw some listed on VMwares website.

I just cant beleive that no one does like a two weekend course.
 
hey nitrobass24, glad to see you're trying to get yourself more marketable. Here's what i can tell you about the VCP, based on my personal experience:

Attendance taken on first day of class, with sign-in sheet (you sign-in, and are given workbooks, etc)
Attendance taken each day
At the end of the class, you have to fill out a survey. When you turn it in, you get a VMWare bag
Then you register for the test, and hopefully pass
When you register for the test, part of the registration process is where/when did you take the VCP class
Records are checked for attendance. If they have you down, and you passed the test, you're notified of being a VCP, and are given a VCP #

Class is $2700-3000. Test is $175. You're in Dallas, so hopefully there's a class nearby. There's two VCP qualified classes, the Install & Configure class which is 4 days, and the compressed class, which also includes the Deploy Secure & Analyze portion...that's 5 days (and really is like drinking from a fire hose). I believe the Install & Configure is $2700 (normally), and the Compressed class is $3000.

AFAIK, there's no two weekend split. I'm sure they probably are afraid of people not showing for the second half, or scheduling the second half out too far from the first, and forgetting it all, and just having to review the whole time. I actually can't think of any classes that I've attended that split the course between two different attendance sessions. IIRC, the best you'll be able to do is choose between M-Thurs for the 4 days course, or Tue-Fri. The Compressed course, from what I have seen is always M-F. Also, be aware that VMWare requires you to update your certs, or they will become invalid. I got VCP on VI3, and now that we're on VI4, I need to update by December to avoid having to go back to a class (another $1400), in addition to taking the VCP4 exam. With several of my certs, VMWare included, it's not a one time deal.

Some certs are version specific, and the only "update" is to get the new one. Case in point, I hold both QLogic and Brocade 4Gb FC certs. There's no update from 4Gb to 8Gb. I will always be 4Gb certified...but if I want to get 8Gb certified, I have to go back to class, and take the 8Gb test...make sense? VMWare allows you to update from one to the next, by reviewing the information delta (either self-learn, or through a class requirement), and then taking the new test. The ones you have to update are a pain, but to potential employers, it shows continuing education, which they like.
