^-- this, I'd just wait for skylake.. new tech, lower power, seems to be the much anticipated. Oh, won't break your bank either.. The newer 6/8 core/DDR4 systems are a total money pit in my opinion. They run hot, they don't game much better than my 4790k in single or dual configs, they consume a ton of power.. the list goes on. Skylake is worth the wait, if you've waited this long already.

I'm not sure why you are posting. Skylake is quadcore dual channel max, no thanks. WTF happened to the Enthusiast? "oh fuck it, quad core is enough".
Moving on.
It's up and running, I'm not sure what happened to my previous post
The OC panel makes it all too easy, button push and 4.2Ghz across all cores, memory overclocks to 2666 at the XMP timings (14 14 14 35) with 1 command rate and a moderate bump in voltage. The ram chips are Hynix but I'm not sure what they are capable of, I tried loosening the timings a bit for 2800 but it wouldn't boot. I'm going to leave it as is since the memory bandwidth is 60GB/s already.
As for the CPU, I ran some brief tests at 4.4Ghz with 1.33V and it seemed OK but have since backed off, I'm just going to use the OC panel whenever I game and leave it at stock when not gaming.
I noticed an immediate difference in general responsiveness and games are definitely loading much faster off the native SATA3.0 Raid.
Windows 8.1 seemed to handle the switch like a champ too, I essentially did nothing, the new MB detected the Intel array from the X58 and Windows 8.1 just re-ran setup and I was up and running in around 30 minutes.
All in all I'm loving this build despite it costing $800 more than it should have...

Congrats on the new build. A bunch more than I am able/willing to spend but I would be equally tempted if I were in your position. You planning to push the OC above 4.2?
I recently ordered a 290X to replace my 7950. It's just a powercolor Turboduo, not sure how it compares to your 290X but I snagged it off ebay from NCIX outlet open box but new for $230 (might be something to keep an eye on if you are looking to crossfire. Did you OC your 290X? Was the same OC stable with the new system?

So, you noticed a huge difference in just general computing over your old Xeon (not counting the SSD performance)? I have my Xeon clocked presently at 4.18ghz.
Also, just how much of a difference would I notice going from SATA II to SATA III with a good quality SSD? Or, would it hardly be noticeable at all?

I couldn't put a number on it. General responsiveness improved, game load times probably halved and the same goes for large apps like photoshop.
I'm running the same install as before on the two Samsung 840s in Raid 0.
Boot times improved as well but I think that is down to the UEFI bios and if I re install windows I can probably make better use of this feature, my Z97 system boots a damn sight faster than my X58 ever did and this system is lagging behind. Once I reinstall Windows in UEFI mode the boot times should drop a great deal.
I'm probably not going to push it at this stage, I just don't have time for tweaking.
In terms of the R9 290X, well TBH I hate this card. It's hot and was very noisy until I watercooled it, after watercooling it still doesn't overclock that well, when the VRMs start to get toasty the OC potential drops substantially. I should be able to run 1190 on the core and 1450 on the memory but after about 30 minutes of gaming the card just packs a wobbly and I have to reboot to get it to not show corruption. Runs fine at 1100/1400 though, that will do until the 390x arrives.

Crossfire was bust, too many issues with slightly mis-matched cards.
Got dual 980Tis for SLI and a second custom WC loop to cool them, the result is awesome.
