Getting a Nikon D100!

Hrm... I just found out one thing I didn't realize about Nikon - all of their DSLR sensors are the same DX Size.

In Canon's DSLR lineup, the Prosumer DSLR's are EF & EF-S compatible, while the Professional DSLR's are either 1.3 crop or full frame (EF Sized). Fortunately Canon doesn't have too many EF-S lenses to make this a worrysome issue. But it is something I hadn't caught earlier. Nikon has their regular 35mm lenses, and their DX lenses. But their digital bodies are all DX compatible.

Anyways, the D100 is a fun camera. For your lens, depending on how you will use your camera, you might want a larger apeture (lower f-numbers). In portraits I usually see apetures like f/2.8 used to blur the background, but this is just the style the photographer aims for so your lens choice will probably work even if it can't do f/2.8. Research this lens' Bokeh, Sharpness, etc. I've heard Nikon's lenses with Defocus Control can adjust Bokeh appearance to do neat things, but I have no first-hand expirence with it (you might look into playing with one of those lenses sometime). Checkout different lenses at a local Camera stores, and do research research research :)

yeah, I got to play with a D100 and that lens this weekend, was pretty sweet. (I like it when I am on a professional photographers good side :p)

I would suggest going with the D70. It would be cheaper and the picture quality and all the settings are still better, WITH a good lens.

well Im not really a pro man, Im only 14 :p I don't really take overly important shots, I cant print a pic out over 8x10 anyway.

later on I am getting Fuji S3 or S4 when I turn 18.

but at all the cameras I have seen, the D100 has been cheaper.

edit: HOLY CRAP. maybe I should check Ebay more often! $700 off the body alone!

This topic comes up often at Nikonians. In summary:

Pro D100
+ Uncompressed RAW files
+ Larger viewfinder image
+ MB-D100 battery pack/vertical grip allows for 10-pin accessories
+ Still produces very capable images
+ Nikon USA has a nice rebate
+ Can use SB-80DX, SB-50DX, SB-800 and SB-600 in TTL
+ Able to use inexpensive AR-3 or generic release.

Con D100
- Older technology
- Older metering (10 segment Matrix)
- Older flash technology (D-TTL)
- Soon to be replaced (PMA 2005???)
(however, it still produces excellent images)

Pro D70
+ More camera than you really need
+ i-TTL flash technology is very impressive!
+ Fairly inexpensive
+ Need to use SB-800 or SB-600 for TTL
+ 1005 RGB pixel Matrix Meter (from the F5)
+ 1/500th sec flash sync

Con D70
- No 10-pin accessories
- Need to use SB-800 or SB-600 for TTL, (which is pricey, though) older flashes can only be used in Manual or Auto mode.
- Need to use the IR remote which can be hard to find (though there are substitutes).

As for the lens, it comes down to $$$ as usual. The 18-70mm AFS is quite good

I dont know where you are looking, but the D70 kit is cheaper than the D100 Body only.

If I was to choose between a D100 or a D70, I'd get a D70. (I bought a Canon Digital Rebel Kit) My school has a D100, and it has absorbed a good deal of abuse. It is tough, but I'm willing to sacrafice some of that toughness because I expect to always wear a camera strap (unless I mount it to a tripod) and keep my camera in a bag that feels safe when handled carefully. I'm not planning on dropping it off of desks onto the floor like the school's D100 has.

My reasons for the D70 is how the sensor reacted in long-exposures. From the images at DPReview, the D70 has much better long exposures than the D100 (which develops a few hot-pixels at ISO 200).

Also, new D100 to new D70, the D70 is cheaper and even comes with a lens. (I don't feel very comfortable buying a camera body on ebay because there are scams out there)

The 18-70mm lens you mentioned earlier is $340 + Shipping at B&H.

I'm not sure if you qualify for Nikon's $100 rebate on the D70, but you might research that.

Also checkout prices at Huppins / One Call. I'm not sure if they ship to Canada, but I have bought a lens from them when they had it cheap. Their store isn't too far from where I live (Idaho), but I have yet to find a reason to go to Spokane, WA.

maybe a little exaduration, but still.

edit: its RitzCamera Canadian? cause man those prices are sweet for a retail site.

I'm sure Ritz is a US store. We have several Ritz (or Kitz) stores around here in Washington. I bought my D70 (body and lens) at my local Ritz.

I am buying off of Ebay beuase it is the only place I trust.

I highly doubt someone with 10 negaitives and 4000 positives is gonna scam.

I dunno how confident I'd be over someone who calls it a "CoolPix D70"

In Canada, your best bet is www.cameracanada.com I've ordered stuff from them four times now and got it within 2 days each time. I've also had good experiences with Henry's - but a little more expensive on some items

hmmm.. perhaps you should re-consider that statement..

I dont trust Ebay much so, Id hit dpreview.com and, then pull up the D70 review and, price it. I saw the kit a Ritz and, a few other places cheaper than they were. Also saw a couple of places offering some nice accessory packages with the camera. The D100 is nice but, the D70 is a by far better deal.

well, within reason here guys. I am not gonna go buy a $1000 camera from a guy with 1 positive feedback. I go after the guys that have 1000+ feedback, they can be trusted.
