I was wondering why [H] forums decided to make general mayhem a subscription thread?

I notice a lot of other forums have a "off topic" or "general" section just for shooting the shit.

Any particular reason for GenMay?

I did a SEARCH ;)

It really cuts down on spam and childish posts. People are less likely to spam if they have something to lose(in this case, $5).

Paying members are far less likely to spam or troll. Besides, this helps pay for the forum costs. $5/yr is not that much.

Please do not mistake my asking this question as a complaint for this being a bad policy.

I guess now that you mention it, it's kind of like the VIP room to get away from all the trollers and flamers.

Thanks for the info.

The other way to get background is to read the "history of genmay FAQ" over at the spinoff genmay forum. It's certainly a partisan viewpoint, but it also gives insight into why Kyle scuttled the original free one and brought it back as subscription (particularly when you contrast the type of posts in that forum with those in this one).

We came WAY before genmay. Most of the old school people from genmay, aka most with a uid under 2000 came from here.
