So if the psu says 30A for a 12v line.. does this mean that whatever i plug in, all 30 amps will try to run through it? Or does something else determine how many amps goes through?

the devices pull what they need. so if you plug something it, it won't put 30a through it, the device will take what it wants, so long as there are amps to spare.

^;)

Its also unlikely that there is really 30A available, unless your supply is sitting in a deep freeze
\that rating is typically taken at 22>25C
components that require a "static" draw are things that continually spin
HDDs, fans ect, most of the rest is a dynamic draw as its called on to perform a function
they will likely have some lowest standby draw, and only occassionally require their full draw (CPU idle vs full load for instance)

check the calculator in the how to buy a PSU thread to get an idea of the maximum theoretical draw of various components

its rare the a config will actuially need even 300 watts of power, even at maximum draw
its also extremely rare to find a PSU geared to supply just the power (amps) needed on the voltage rails a given config would have

so you see alot of supplies with both unused capacity on some rails artifically inflating its wattage rating, yet still underpowered on the rails your config might actually need
and deceptively rated

thus, some monster 400 watt supplies cant seem to run a config, while a different makwes 300 watt can :p
