I've seen a lot of 40Gbps IB cards go for $125/piece but i've not seen a 40Gbps NIC yet to be in reasonable range. Yeah also noticed that 40Gbps IB switch, would be bit overkill in home lab, direct h2h connection would be enough

Okay, I'm confused... I thought that a NIC was a NIC, regardless of medium. Are fiber cards not called NICs either?

Well the general definition for NIC is: NIC == (Ethernet) Network Interface Controller.
That's atleast how i see it.

Probably the colloquial usage. Generally fiber/ Infiniband cards use HBA like "dumb" SAS cards without cache.
