hi,
i am by my own admission fairly n00by(is that a word) when it comes to pc hardware. I am trying to build a gaming PC. I do not plan on building from scratch. Rather, I am trying to make a variety of upgrades to my current system. Hence, I do not need to change my monitor, any of my cd drives, my floppy, my usb's. keyboard/mouse, or case.My hard drive is also a possible keeper. I have an old 20 gig internal and an 80 gig 7200rpm external, i dont know if that needs changing. Everything else I want to change. My spending limit is 600 dollars.What upgrades would you recommend for me to optimize my pc to be the best possible gaming machine and keep it under my price limit. Thanks in advance. again i apologize for the completely n00b question.
 
Is your current case custom or prebuilt? You may be able to utilize the case if it has the right kind of form factor provisions (ATX, mATX).

None the less, I've always like the A7N8X-X motherboard with XP3000+, and a ATI 9800pro. You may need a new powersupply as well to cover the added video card. Through in a 512mb (possibly a gig) in dual mode and your good to go. Sorry, don't know how much of a noob you proclaim yourself to be :) , so if you need some explanations, write em' up. ;)

9800 Pro - $222 (Newegg)
A7N8X-X ~ $69.00
Processor ~ 146.00
Memory ~ $89.00 (1x512mb)

Total = $526
 
Lol, well i kno a little bit. i have a prebuilt atx case. n right now i have 312 kb of ram. should i try to use the ram i have now or scrap it n jus buy a 512 stick. if i choose to get a new power supply how powerful should it be. thnx for ur help. any other suggestions?
 
Well, if it's only 312kb, you better be damn sure to get a new stick! (kidding)

With powersupplies, you can usually find them pretty cheap. I'm try to stay above the 400w range, that way you shouldn't have to buy a new one any time soon.

This is a good choice, although I'd recommend a Zalman Al-Cu if it fits, and a 9800 pro over the 9600XT, if you can at all afford it.

What are your system specs, your system memory would indicate shared and subsequently , integrated video. You 20 gig hd would lead me to belive that the rest of your system dates back pretty far. I would take the 600 and start form scratch. Your only about 200 away from fairly nice rig. Save up another 200 and use your current rig for a linux box. JMHO

Ps you could even part out some of your box to pay for it and of course your opticals are salvageable

yea 200 bux isnt too far away. i got a job as a camp counselor n it pays 150 weekly. wut do u mean by integrated video. yea i could start with a new box n jus build from scratch. i would rather have it running off windows tho. i have access to all windows editions so that isnt a problem.if i were to start from scratch using some of the components from my current pc, would that b significantly more expensive.
 
Well 312 is an odd number. I assume its 320 256 and a 64 with 8 meg shared for integrated video. Integrated video is a video core buit into the motherboard. Lousy for gaming , at least in the vintage of your rig. I would do this. Start a new thread thats titled " I have 800 for a gamer rig help me " and you will get a shit load of recomendations. Enjoy

Ps in your post explain your keeping your opticals and your monitor and you need a breakdown of most cost effective box.

312MB? dude, not to be a ball buster, but are you sure you meant 512MB? :confused:

Anyways, yeah, MIAG hit it on the head with a decent system to get by on.
 
hercules 9800 pro- 189 dollars
abit nf7-s 85 dollars
mobile 2400+ - 80 dollars
 
I've read good things about the Shuttle AN35N ultra and it goes for around $54 on the Egg. With the $$ you save over an Abit or DFI mobo you could put it towards a 9800pro which are coming down in price. If your in too OC'ing then a mobile 2400+ would be a good choice, if not then a Barton 2800+ would fit the price range.
