im thinking about gettting a new videocard to go with my new system i am building.
i have a Ti 4200 gainward as of now

i am thinking about getting a EVGA 5900SE that people say can oc to the 5950U stats for 180.00

Or the saphire 9800 Pro for 240

i am trying to stay under 250.00 and the benches i see on the evga look great but not sure what one to get..
Here is the EVGA bench'e

not sure about the 9800
what u guys think ?

9800 pro for suuuuuuure. scroll through all the pages and i gaurentee about 99% of it all is raving about the aeswome ness of the 9800 pro.

another vote for the 9800pro. its fast and not really that much slower than the 9800xt which is almost twice as much.

The 5900SE that comes with Call of Duty is a real good buy if you don't alrady have the game. I'd just keep the ti4200 and hold out for the next gen cards. Its still plenty fast.

9700pros are a good buy rightnow to at around $210.

BFG 5900NU - $170
9800 Pro - $228

Yes the 9800 is better but it also costs about $60 more.

9800pro 229 @ newegg. its worth the $60 more have a looksee at the reviews and you will see the right choice;)

Call me crazy, but after seeing and using both, I do prefer the Nvidia FX series cards.

id say wait until the r420 + n40's come out.... which should be a few months hopefully. then you can probally get a 9800XT for a 9800pro price ;)

The 9800 pro is the better card, the 5900nu is the better value. I'll take the 5900nu and $60. BTW, I have both.

if you dont have call of duty, get the bfg 5900nu. if you do, get the 9800.

So are you saying that the 5900 and the 5900nu are the same? That link I posted in my last post says nothing about "nu".

Yes, unless there is a TX or SE or XT after the 5900. A 5900 is a 5900nu which is a 5900(non-ultra).

This BFG 5900nu will OC to a 5950 ($400-$500 card), matches and sometime surpasses the performance of a 9800pro, and only cost $170. It definitely is the best card out there when comparing cost/performance.

******500th woo woo

If you can still get a 5900nu with 400/850 go for that. It overclocks through the roof, at least mine does, without a bios flash.

The 9800Pro is a good choice also though, lol.

**IDIots and ##Idiots... I hate to use those terms to describe those NVIDIA and ATI fanatics here in these forums...

Well, basically the choice boils down to which games you're gonna play most frequently with the video card. If you're going to play mostly Quake3 and legacy Direct3D games, with a few DirectX9 games in the mix, and at relatively low AA and AF settings, then get one of the higher-end GeForce FX cards, such as the 5900. But if you're going to play the newest DX9 games more often and/or you intend to play all of your games with the AA/AF settings cranked to a high or maximum setting, then the higher-end Radeon 9### series cards will be your best bet.

I set my AA/AF settings high on my 5900nu and it's fine.

I have a 9800Pro and that handles high AA/AF settings well also.

By the time alot of full DX9 games come out the new line of Nvidia/ATI cards will be here anyway.

Yeah, but do you really want to know how much $$$ that the new line of cards that'll play those full DX9 games with decent framerates with all quality settings set to even a medium level? (I'm willing to bet that they'll cost $500 to $600 - and any GFX card that will be less expensive than $500 will show no performance increase whatsoever over the current R9800XT.)

best comment so far on this thread..

I have to agree, the FX cards do kick alot of ass for current games, and older generation games... BUT there is a trend with the newer DX9 games running better on the ATI cards...

For me, I'm very torn on the situation myself, as I often frequent the Rage3d forums, and the mulitude of problems reported astounds me... of course you have to take them with a grain of salt, but still you cannot ignore them.. maybe it's just old prejudices staying afloat, but I have to say, there still seems to be a good amount of issue with the cataylst drivers that make me wary..

Complete conjecture, but it was a nice read anyway.

We should wait and see what the next GPU's offer before we comment on them like they're out already and the official benches have been done.

Nobody is doubting that the 9800XT is a great card.

Have a read in the nvidia forums sometime and there are just as may probz as ATI are having with the cats;)
Only Diffrence is ATI seem to be listening to there customers one hell of a lot more:D

And have a good read of the tests done on the OCP on both cards and its clear to see why people are bagging the FX range of cards so badly.

I've read the reviews to death.. Like I said, it's probably just old prejudices making me think there are more problems with the cats than there really are... But I do give props to Terry, the catalyst maker... He's checking the rade3d forums all the time..
