Got my new Alienware the other day. Geforce 6800 PCIe and other stuff. Hooked it up to my existing monitor and was stunned at the graphics of various games. It met all my expectations. But there is one weird problem, my text is fuzzy (in and out of various applications including web pages, windows etc.). I'm running XP Professional. I've tried everything and can't seem to correct it.

My refresh rate is 85. Text isn't too bad, it's just fuzzy enough to drive me nuts.

Ideas?

Check your video properties. There is something in there for fonts on LCDs. Look for aliasing or something. Everything will be crystal clear after that. I saw that when I first installed Server 2003 but changed it right away. Now that I have the proper drivers installed I cant seem to see it anymore on the advanced properties.

I had a slightly related problem. I'm using two CRTs. Enabling ClearType actually made it worse.

I can only assume that the effects of ClearType on CRTs are subjective. Either way, as antialiasing more or less works by making text fuzzy, I'd recommend disabling it if it bothers you.

You can do this by opening the Display properties, clicking on the Appearance tab, clicking the Effects button, and... the rest is up to you.
 
It's a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070sb. No problem with previous computer, so I'm assuming it's video properties as suggested in this thread. I'm going to try some of these suggestions and see what happens.

Can I tell it to not use anti-aliasing for windows apps but still use it for games and such? Or is it a system setting?

Good tips, but couldn't get anything to really work that well. Any more tips would be appreciated and I'll keep fiddling with settings to see if I stumble across anything.

Lower your refresh rate to 60 and see if there's an improvement. If there is, it's probably more likely it's the monitor settings themselves. Did you download the NaviSet software from the NEC/Mitsubishi website? It makes it a hell of a lot easier to change settings. Convergence is a good one when it comes to focus. Also, have you tried the focus adjustments on the left side? Even if focus is off, the nature of repeated patterns in graphics can mask it, but show up immediately when text is displayed. You will need a #0 Philips at least 4 inches. Sears sells the 0x4 Craftsman Professional for around $4. It's not easy....the focus is VERY sensitive, and you don't turn the screw as much as "twitch" your hand for minute adjustment. My 2141sb, which is the same as yours, had really great focus out of the box as was everything else, but adjusting everything made it even better, just about as perfect as you could want on a CRT.
