School me on these Fusion-IO ioCache cards. Are they worth putting in each of our 3 hosts? Will they make that much of an IO difference to the SAN datastores? $7,500 a card plus software and licensing is a bit steep if it's not going to do much.

I understand they're more for burst traffic than sustained loads, but how good are they?
 
They are good. I have two ioDrive cards in my lab boxes. I'd probably steer you to some good SSDs (Intel 3700s, Kingston E100, etc) and PernixData FVP for the software stack if these are your VMware servers. If they are physical look at FusionIO or EMC XtremCache...but for VMware it's hard to beat FVP. Works great. No in-guest agents. Does both read and write caching.

Makes a lot of storage I/O problems go away. Soaks up a lot of load off the back-end array.
 
Pernix also has an SMB license that's ~$10k list if you think you'll only need 1 SSD and have less than 100 VMs on those three hosts. Couple that with good SSDs NetJunkie lists above and you can have a solid flash tier for less than the cost of 3 Fusion IO cards alone. You can free trial their software as well.
 
These are HP hosts, so, stuck with having to use HP drives. Not even sure I could get an HP SSD to work in these 580G7's .

Fuck....we'll wait for the action item list. lol Fuckity fuck fuck fuck. Our SAN IOPS is just not cutting it. And the CEO doesn't want to spend a lot to fix the issue. *throws hands and every paper on my desk in the air* $30k wouldn't get me a blowjob if performance SAN storage were a hooker.

I give up.

There are other options for PCIe flash that cost less than FusionIO. We can help you on that. Also..when we do PernixData FVP on Cisco UCS we don't buy Cisco SSDs. We use Intels in Cisco caddies.

If that's the solution we can work through that.

Oh I know. Like I said, I'll wait and see the action item report as well as have some further discussions with your engineers. We'll get this fixed, I just don't think it's going to be within the budget constraints that our CEO wants to stay in.
 
Looking at FVP the cost of the software per host plus a PCIe SSD comes to about what a Fusion-IO card with software and licensing would cost. Seems like a two nickles or a dime situation to me.
 
You have more than 33 servers in each of those hosts? The SMB license is for four hosts, 1 ssd per host and accelerate up to 100 VMs. That's 10k total, no per host
 
3 hosts, maybe 10 servers per host. We have a fourth host, but I don't think you can put an SSD card in a DL360. I'd have to crack it open to look if there is room.
 
I'm still waiting for Pernix Bits myself. I signed up under the vExpert form..but never received any contact. I would like to test it out..see how it works...then I can make the case to see if it makes sense to become a partner. I think it does based on what i've read since vFRC is still very much 1.0 and i'm starting to see a trend with my customers that could benefit from this, especially around db's.

If memory serves me there are two PCI-e slots in a DL360. I'm pretty sure I have dual Fiber cards in a couple of my G8s... It would depend on what you have for expansion cards all ready.
 
I was speaking with a rep for OCZ recently, and it seems that they offer a card as well based on Toshiba NAND that is much more cost effective and may be worth looking into.

Yes, I know about the OCZ of old, but post acquisition they are a completely different company now that they are under Toshiba.
 
I just can't see why anyone would go OCZ right now. Too many other good, well known, reliable offerings out there.

I have to agree. After some looking plenty of other manufacturers have good cards for decent prices. I just can't want to buy anything OCZ right now.
 
I understand, they definitely tarnished their name with poor products pre-Toshiba acquisition. They are very willing to give out demo cards though if you want to give one a spin. We plan on testing a few in house pretty soon to just check the box that we tried them vs. the other guys.

We actually just got EMC to throw in a FusionIO card "free" with our latest VNX2-5400 purchase, so in a few weeks I can report back on that flavor as well.
 
Well, looks like we're going with PernixData FVP and Micron PCIe cards. Thanks go out to NetJunkie and Varrow for the extremely fast turnaround and help. I really can't wait to get this implemented. Our entire team here can't wait.
 
FWIW, I am running Pernix on Samsung 840 Pro, I have it in my budget to simply replace the SSDs once a year whether they are busted or not. The used SSD can then be put to use in refurbished desktops or put on the shelf as spares. IMHO this approach beats spending thousands on Fusion IO or similar hardware products.
 
Look up HP part number 763836-s21. Fusion IO SX300 1.6TB Atomic series. List is $8,500 but an reseller that has connections should be able to get them for you in the mid sevens or lower. They just released these this month.

Then use SIOS DataKeeper cluster edition.

Three host hyper-v cluser without a SAN. Also with SIOS you can use any disk, not just Fusion IO disks.

For our application the performance advantages of PCIe are needed.

Wish I would of asked for that when we bought our 5800, i did get powerpath thrown in for 19 hosts...
 
Some EMC reps are "throwing in" the flash cards and a license of XtremCache on deals. Just depends on the sales team...and keep in mind nothing is obviously free. The cost is baked in to the deal.
