My computer used to freeze only when playing windows media player for a very long time....and then it became more sporadic...i was willing to deal with it.

Then it started happening. The freezes are a lot more common now and totally unbearable. I cant play games, i cant listen to music and have a screen saver going at the same time, and i can't play videos.

I ran a format and installed the Omega drivers for the RADEON 9800 pro, but i have also used the Catalyst and i dont know what to do anymore. I also just got a blue screen of death because of the OMEGA, I THINK...im not sure.

I have an AIW 9800PRO.

When the computer freezes, its almost like a complete freeze of all functions because its a buffer freeze where a little blip of sound plays over and over and over again. So it feels like a hardware problem. If it is a hardware problem where should i start...my ram, my vid card,....what...

i installed the VIA4in1 vhipset shit too..the latest and greatest...

please keep chcking back on this board as i plan to keep it going for awhile...i know im gonna need a lot of help on this one...its been around forever...

I am not sure of a solution yet, but I may be able to figure one out. When the game freezes it is usually when your moving around right? Or does it freeze when your standing in place too. Plus when it freezes does sound freeze too? For example does the video stop and the sound goes "How are you d-d-d-d-d-oo-o-ing Dr. Fre-e-e-e-e-e-eman?"

If I was you then I would do this-
Reformat the Hard drive.
Install a fresh copy of (what operating system do you use?) Windows XP PRO.
Install Chipset drivers
Install Videocard drivers from ATI (not OMEGA)
Install all other drivers necessary in order for the AIW to function properly
Install windows updates.

FInd (google.com) hard drive scanning software, that checks the hard drive for errors and bad sectors. See if your videocard and/or CPU is overheating during intensive use. Use software such as, Motherboard Monitor (I think thats what it is called.)

If after doing all of this, then maybe you have a piece of rotton hardware. It could, just could be the RAM. If everything fails then maybe try reconfiguring the RAM, see through taking one out and running the computer and putting it back in, or so if one stick is bad. Try using some other RAM from a different computer. You get the picture.
 
I think my sound card is the culprit. I left my 3d screen saver running allll night without ANY sound playing in addition and it never froze once. Does that mean it is definetely my souncard?
 
No, just possibly. Your soundcard or its drivers may be the culprit. I've had an older Audigy cause a similar problem in the past. It was the card.

However, it may also be a thermal issue. Easiest thing in the world to do is take the side panel off an run for a while and see if the problem abates. That's assuming you don't run your PC in the engine room of the Titanic or anywhere near the cracks of doom.
 
Ok this problem is still here...im running my onboard sound and i took out my Creative SB Live...i just started C&C Generals and tried my screen saver stuff.....and its still messing up and freezing....im pretty convinced at this point that it is a hardware issue.....im gonna try doing stuff with the side off and see if it freezes or not,...i am doubting that is the problem. Secondly, i am currently running memtest-86....its 15 hours into the test...how long is this test and will this fully determine that my ram is plausibly going bad?

If not, what next?

That's what I was thinking. Get AdaWare, SpyBot Search&Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. Run them, and see what they find.
