Setting up my NAS with FreeNAS. I need a cheap HDD just to store the OS. Has anyone used this before? Is it reliable?

Over a decade ago I had a few of these in desktop PCs.

I did not have thousands of this model so its hard to tell. I personally would not use a spinner for this especially one so old. A modern USB3 stick would be faster and more reliable.
 
I guess I can only cut costs so far. I looked at the EVO sale but all that extra space would go to waste because you can only store the OS on the drive.
 
I've been using a little SanDisk 8GB USB 2.0 stick that I got for $10 years and years ago as a FreeNAS boot disk.... works wonderfully. Try to save your 3.5 / 2.5 bays for something that matters :D

Don't waste a sata port and a drive on that. Use a usb flash drive to install freenas to.
