This was brought up on slickdeals over some external hard drive formatting, thought I'll ask the experts here. Is it really worth doing full format instead of quick format? Because full format takes a much longer time, especially for an external hard drive on USB 2.0.

Is it good idea to just full format once at the first time you get the drive or full format every year?

I only ever do a full format by accident.... or installing windows 2000 where 'quick' isn't available.. quick format will be fine..

Agreed. The days of full formatting are long over, and it's just wear and tear to some degree to force the heads to move sector by sector (hard drives store data in 512 byte sectors; this has nothing to do the filesystem) across hundreds of gigs of bits. There's just no point in doing it, realistically.
