ForceWare overclock 2D/3D question

I noticed that I can overclock the 2D/3D seperately with the ForceWare driver for my 6800 Ultra.

I simply set the 2D speed equal to the 3D overclock which is currently at 443/1180

Will that shorten the lifespan of my video card?

The computer is on 24/7 and 90% of the day is spent in 2D mode. When I'm at work the computer is doing nothing at all.

Well, i'm not sure what temps I get while playing games but at idle it's at 54C according to the ForceWare display control panel.

Ambient room temperature is currently 76F/24C

54C is pretty norm for GT and ultras from what i have seen, might want to turn down the 2d so it can run really cool when its running in 2d mode, are you doing anything outside of games that is video card intensive that would need it so fast?

Ummm and why would you need your core overclocked for 2D ?? LMAO!!?

Solitaire not showing enough FPS?

You want to give your card a break the other 20 hours a day that you're not gaming.

Why not let it run cooler when you dont need all of that horse power?

BTW, I was accidentally overclocked the 2D and was wondering why my 3DMark wasnt going up!!!!!! Then I went to bump it up some more... and realized what I had done!! LOL

No, I'm not doing anything intensive in 2D at all.

I think I'll turn down the 2D overclock.

Do you think that contstantly changing speeds from 2D to 3D will be more harmful than just keeping both 2D and 3D overclocked?

it will be less harmful than having your gpu OCed 24/7.

Anyone know how the Autooverclock function works? Is it worth enabling over the manual overclock if you want a more 'worry free' experience?

supposedly on nvidia cards if your 2d/3d settings dont match you will have issues.
all the wizards around here tout that as a fix.

it only is a problem if your memory clocks dont match from 2D to 3D.

It won't be any worse than oc'ing any other card that doesn't give you the option...and as was mentioned above it has solved freezing issues for some people (setting 2D/3D the same)

Well after I set the 2D different than the 3D, I had a BSOD while playing UT2004.

Coincidence ?

Perhaps.

But i'm going back to setting 2D equal to 3D speeds again,

I can't have different settings for my 2D/3D memory setting. If the 3D memory setting is changed, the 2D memory setting follows. The GPU core settings can be different so I run my 2D GPU at stock but the 2D memory gets automatically set to whatever my 3D memory setting.

My Gainward 6800GT's software overclocks exactly that way. I have the GPU speed at 350 stock for 2D and 400 for 3D. When you click the 'Enhanced Mode Settings' it overclocks the 3D GPU speed to 400 and the Memory toe 1100. It also changes the 2D memory to 1100.

I dunno if it actually does anything but the techs on the eVGA members forums do reccomend setting 2d=3d speeds on 6800 series cards as one of the first steps to troubleshooting issues that users post there.

If your really concerned about heat, and no issues result from doing so, go ahead and try underclocking the 2d settings, but seeing as how the card is for the most part idle in 2d mode i doubt youll see a huge difference

I guess if you have issues. But I dont have any issues. :)

You guys sound like a bunch of chicks, with all of your "issues"
