Font size at higher resolutions

I've typically run at 1280x1024, but I'd like to be running at a higher resolution. My computer supports very high resolutions, but I'm thinking 1600x1200 is a good step for me.

At this resolution, however, I'm having trouble reading text. I've upped the DPI to 120, and I think I will up it again to 144 after I make this post, but I'm wondering what the best way to compensate for the new resolution. Should I change the font style as well? And it seems when I changed the font size, the task bar became much bigger. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'm a little surprised that it happened.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions, other than upping the font size to help me be able to read text at my new resolution?

Thank you.
