I wasn't real sure where to put this, and my lame attempt at searching the topic didnt yield much and I'm really kinda lazy when I can just post a new thread about something that probably has 100 threads already: anywho

So I just read about folding, yeah i know I'm kinda slow when it comes to well, everything. I would like to participate in this with 3 computers the stats are as follows:
1) 250 gb HD, AMD 64x2 4000+ @ 2.1 Ghz, 8800 GT OC 512mb, 2gb ram, Corsair 450VX
2) 150 gb HD, Pent 4 w/HT @ 3.0 Ghz, 7600 GS 256mb, 2gb ram, Generic 300w
3) 200 gb HD, AMD 64 x2 3600+ @ 2.0 Ghz, 8600GT 256mb, 2gb ram, Generic 300w

Are these computers enough to help out?
How long do you have to run the program for? Can you run it when you want ( like i obviously dont want to run it wehn i'm playing games
I got lost at the Hardfolding site as i had no clue what i was looking at so perhaps some1 can explain it or give me a link to read up on. please.

I know I'm annoying but would really like to get in on this as I have had family suffer from such diseases.

I've used an E6600 (2.4GHz dual core) and was in the top 25% of productivity running 6 hrs/day. This shows that the average computer on these projects is not too powerful. Any computer that is running will do something; some will do more per hour than others.

You can set the project to run within a window of time - overnight only, for example. You can also set the amount of CPU used - if you run a web site overnight, you might want to restrict the project to only run, say, 75% of CPU.

Don't assume that Folding@home is the only project. If you look at World Community Grid (WCG) for example, there are other projects of this type. Folding@home and SETI@home get the press but other projects are worth doing. WCG works on dengue, AIDS, cancer and others as well as some folding projects.
 
Your machines will fold perfectly well. On the dual core boxen you might give the SMP client a shot and see how things go.... they are a bit picky and still in beta, but they produce MUCH faster than the console client. One issue you may have is that the SMP client does not like to be shut down, which might be a problem......

If you want to be able to reliably "pause" the client, stick with the non-graphical console client. Run one instance on your P4, and you can run two instances on your dual core boxen...
