Folding Upgrade Options

I just recently put a cheap sempron am2 pc for the parents to use, this was before i started folding. Now it takes about 2 days to finish a work unit on the normal window client
and i want to upgrade it.

I have two choices stick an x2 4000 or spend the extra cash and buy a e2160 + new mobo and use back all the generic stuff from that pc which means
no ocing for the while. If i get the c2d cpu i'll eventually upgrade the ram and psu so that i can oc but for the mean time it will just be running stock with the smp client.

Is it worth the extra money to get the c2d cpu over the x2 ?

I don't really have any numbers from X2s that are current but I would guess that at stock, the 4000 will make around 800 PPD. At stock the E2160 would make about 900. However, once you consider overclocking potential of these 2 CPUs, the E2160 would lay a spanking on the AMD.

Like most upgrades though, it's usually ends up with whatever the wallet tells you that you CAN do.

I just put together a cheap quickbooks / solitaire box for the office. I got the Asrock Wolfdale 1333 D667 mobo for $48 and the E2180 for $80. I think the E2180 is worth the extra $8 for the 10x multi instead of the E2160.

Without even trying I was able to oc the e2180 to 2.67ghz doing nothing more than bumping the fsb to 267.

For a few more bones, many suggest the GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L motherboard for a lot more oc'ing options.

Actually I did not take into account that I had been using the X2 machine fairly heavily.
Now FahSpy is reporting 800ppd.

If you get the E2160 then do the BSEL pad mod to get it to boot up at 266 instead of 200 netting an OC of 2.394 up from the stock 1.800. do a search to see if your mobo will support a 266mhz cpu. I have successfully done this to 3 cpu's with the frys combo motherboards and can help you through it step by step. drop me a PM if you have any questions.
