Just getting into the F@H game, already have it set up on my server and browsing terminal both of which run 24/7 so they will be plodding along at their own pace.

Am planning to set it up on my gaming system as well (Q9450 and 8800GT - soon to be GTX260) but the thing is the machine is probably only switched on for a couple of hours a day, and some days not at all if I'm too busy to game. I know that ain't so good for my numbers, but how would it impact the F@H program's distribution of work units? Will my two clients - the regular cpu client as well as the gpu client - complete enough work units in the amount of time they are running to make it meaningful? Not looking to break any world records or anything here, just trying to do my bit...

I would rather not leave my system on 24/7 as apart from the power consumption issue, the thing is LOUD and I have to sleep in the same room.

The GPU client is fast..... when your not gaming.

Honestly I'd just run the CPU client. It has longer deadlines and will get something in. If you ever decide to leave it on for a while (few hours a day) when your not playing, then go for the GPU.
