So I started my folding back up on the main machine. P4 3.4HT 2gigs.

I have a Celly 2.8D with 256mb: Got it free though :)
I will have that folding when I get off my lazy butt.

And I need to install the folding client on my lappy : AMD TL56 1 gig.

So, hopefully soon, 3 machines folding like mad.

Great news!! Glad to have you folding with us!

Stick around, and if you have any questions, ask away! Great group of people here:)

Just in time to get your output maximized for the C[H]imp Challenge! You will find everyone to be rather hospitable around here. Don't hesitate to ask if you have questions.

Welcome to the team Shambler, sounds like you're off to a great start already.

Welcome.

If the lappy is yours, do take care to add some additional cooling to it. Laptops aren't meant to run at 100% all the time. You may want to consider one these Zalman Laptop Coolers.

This is true, every computer in my house folds except my lappy, I don't want to melt the poor thing :p

Welcome btw.

I've found that my lappy is happy if I elevate it off the desk with a couple of pencils. This seems to allow better air flow through the fans, and it doesn't go into fan overdrive any more.

I've got a super cheap mobility stand that I bought years ago. Works fine for me. However, I am on a corporate laptop (and since I am about to quit my job, I don't care if it up and dies :)

But probably elevating it some and getting some airflow underneath should be fine.

Oh heck yeah I prop my lappy up. I will probably run F@H at around 50% and monitor it for a few days just to make sure.

But for the most part, a few strategically placed CD cases keep my baby elevated, and the fans clear. A bit ghetto but does the job for WOW gaming, vid watching, net/email, vid converting.

If I go to 100% full on while I'm at work and sleep, should probably get a "real" laptop cooler stand.

Other than Zalman, any other brands I should check out?

Wouldn't mind spending 30-40 + tax.

Or maybe I could just close and rest the lappy on its lid... think this would put too much pressure on the screen/frame?

The Zalman's on a few websites have very good reviews. Check Notebookreview.com for other suggestions.

I wouldn't close the screen/lid if you're folding at 100%. It does tend to get hot and I'm not entirely sure what that would do the your screen (due to the temps).

Small update and question:

Update: I just realized I have an old Dell P3 733 384 SD133 sitting around doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Looks like its going towards the [H]orde!

Question:How key is memory usage/size/speed in folding... especially with an older machine listed above.

Is my machine even worth running, or should I buy/build a new AMD/Intel machine?

Keep in mind, I don't have funds fallin off trees or anything. But for cancer killin.. I'm willing to eat Ramen for a while :)

I had a dual PIII @ 550MHz running up until recently. It was getting anywhere from 20-40PpD per processor depending on WU. When it reached the point that 2 processors couldn't consistently get me a WU per week it was time to let it go.

Also had a Celeron 850MHz that I just gave away, didn't do a whole lot better.

Looks like ima scrap it, and check some new hardware then... the thing has a Voodoo2 in it :( Ran Unreal like a champ.

This will be hard...

If you can afford a Quad buy it. In the long run the science it can churn out versus an older machines is about 20x more using the same wattage.

Quads average around 175watts and easily produce 4k PPD (overclocked to 3.0 Ghz+) 3.6Ghz can get you 4.7kPPD YMMV

I have some computers exact same speed and memory and for whatever reason they produce 100-200 PPD different.... /shrug

Ill check pricing tonight.
Think Quad + mobo + HDD + ram = $400 or below?
Super small HDD (cheapest basically), and probably only 2 gigs (ive seen sets for 60 bones and such)
