well then make sure you use every mount possible on that motherboard.. otherwise you will break the motherboard with a vertical standing case..

Seriously though, it's not that great of an idea. Thermalright recommends that you don't even use it vertically because its high weight could cause damage. If only for that reason, it isn't worth the trouble.

If you're really set on it, then go ahead. But there's really no incentive to go with the copper version over the standard one (aside from the fact that it's shiny, of course ;)).

Do you have the system environmental variables setup?

CAL_NO_FLUSH=1
CAL_PRE_FLUSH=1
BROOK_YIELD=2
FLUSH_INTERVAL=96

My ATI 4850's use 1 - 8% of CPU (E5200) so I don't know where you are getting this whole core stuff .....

These variables has been around for about 2 months to lower CPU usage and boost PPD

Both. However, in response to Vaulter98c who brought up the fact that people without unlimited budgets tend to prefer cards with active warranties, Hueristic posted a thread filled with people who have spend a ton of money on F@H hardware. I fail to see what the point of that response was.
 
Evil, Response about env variables in your other thread about it. It seems to be helping on the CPU usage at least.

I'm currently getting about 3040 ppd on a 511 pointer with my 4890 @ 900 Mhz.
 
Maybe the settings Evil posted for his 4850 are holding back my 4890 somewhat. I wouldn't know how to tweak the settings to match with the faster GPU any more than most of you all would know what 20.8-42 radial Firestone R1W means. Perhaps some of you guys who know about "farms" might get that one.

The point of the response is that if you're going to be in 3 different threads here telling us we're wrong (if not completely negligent) not to be recommending a 9800gx2 over anything else, I think it's perfectly fair to ask where's yours then. Remember, Vaulter's comment (and others) was in response to him saying EVERYONE should be buying second hand gx2's and we should be recommending EVERYONE to buy them.

Fair enough. I still believe that Hueristic's comments were uncalled for.

Thanks for the info. That's the first time I've seen mention of those settings here.
 
I think you just proved my point. m not against buying second hand hardware (my entire 3way box is second hand as are my 2 260's) but for the most part (the big picture, read, not just a few guys here and there) people will prefer new gear to used gear when
1) the part in question is EOL for a long time now
2) No good aftermarket heat solution besides water
3) It breaks, your screwed
4) Lower power cost, lower heat production, and almost similar point values (less than 2k differance)

Again, people with farms arent your normal folders, so what they do is their choice. Thos guy has a budget and he can get more points for the same $$ with less heat and power draw, and have a warranty for when things go FUBAR (and they will)

If you wanted to avoid childish behaviour than you should have watched your own tone to begin with.
 
So anyway. Parts for the 4x 275 machine have been ordered. The parts for a $280 ATI test machine (ordered before I started this thread) came in yesterday, got that setup and folding pretty easily.

The first thing I noticed is ATI card gets pretty hot, but with the catalyst control center I jacked the fan speed to 100% and it's running at 37c or so at full load. The CPU (2.8 black X2) with stock cooler and FAH std on one core stabilized at 52, which doesn't really bother me.

XP booted at 11:30PM last night and it's done 1.5 WU's as of 11:30AM, so if it keeps up this pace that will be 3wu/24 hr.
 
you should look into notfred's on that CPU, will put out more than any std client will

but good luck regardless!
