Folding Box Specs

I'm wondering if you guys think these are good specs for a dedicated folding box. They seem just fine to me, but if you have any input it would be appreciated. Especially if you know where I can get good deals on any of this stuff.

They're not exactly apples to apples, I wanted to build the AMD version slightly more powerful. The thing that really worries me is the off brand PSU. I'm having trouble finding a name brand micro ATX case. I'd really rather avoid running them naked, but I'll consider it. I can't find a Conroe compatible mATX motherboard with integrated graphics. I really don't want to lay down the $100 or more for a GPU untill the GPU client comes out.

If the boxes are for strictly Folding/light Net browsing, why not just slap in a cheap $5 PCI video card? Saves money and power.

Same with the hard drive. Put in a cheap $10 one from a local computer store, not a more expensive one.

You don't need a CD rom for a dedicated machine. Take one out of your main rig, install the software, take it out and re-install in the main machine.

You have to think like a cheap bastage.

i shaved at least 100 bucks off your price...with a powersupply, but no case...

hi whilst I would agree with Bill in general terms the D805 i have one, will outpoint the x2 3800 I also have one, my best plan would be get a D805 and a conroe capable board making sure it will handle the 1066 FSB and when funds become available get a conroe. oh yes and with a good cooler like the Artic cooling freezer Pro 7 it will OC very nicely. just check the ACFP will fit inside your case it is a big old cooler.

Intel has an mATX board with onboard graphics. D946GZ.

I'm running it right now till decent mATX board comes out.

Most likely because soon the GPU folding client will be released, and he'll be able to harness all the extra power of that x1600.

maybe not. The Stanford site talks about running the GPU client on the x1900 (ATI R580 chip). They also mention that the client folds much slower on the R520, which is what the x1800 is. I'm pretty sure that the x1600 and the x1300 are the R530 and the R515 (respectively), and the Stanford site doesn't mention them (at least I couldn't find it). So right now who knows if the new GPU client will work on the x1600.

Which would be a damn shame cause that's what I've been looking at. I have a old ATI x300 that I bought on ebay for $28 last year, and was planning to upgrade to the x1600 when the new folding client came out. I'm not much of a gamer -Diablo is pretty much it, so I didn't want to spend the extra on the 1900 vs the 1600.

The GPU client works on 32-bit GPUs. The only 32 bit GPUs are currently ATIs x1xxx series (7xxx series are 24-bit).

That's a valid reason for considering a better GPU card. BUT until it comes out, why waste money trying to second guess what will work well on the graphics card folding? Just put in a cheap $5 card and use that til the GPU client comes out. Make a decision then.

I've built a couple machines with In-Win power supplies, and never had a problem. Neither machine was a super-powerful rig, but both are running to this day just fine.

Which GPUs will be supported? We have not made any final decisions on this issue. However, our software will likely require the very latest GPUs from ATI (especially now that the newest ATI GPUs support 32 bit floating point operations). Previous work of ours used NVIDIA GPUs as well, but we have now concentrated on ATI GPU's as they allow for significant performance increases for FAH over NVIDIA's GPU's (at least at the current generation). Our GPU cluster has 25 1900XT's and 25 1900 XTX's. We find a considerable performance increase of 1900XT's even over 1800XT's, due to the architectural differences between the R580 and R520 GPU's. Our code will run on R520's, but considerably more slowly than R580. We're very much looking forward to trying out R600's.

I won't be buying a GPU for them untill I find out what works well and is cheap too. Whatever GPU I get, it'll have to be an entry level to mid ranged board. I don't want to double the price of the rig.

I think I've decided on going with the PD 805, it just makes more sense from a budget standpoint. Then there is the ability to drop in a low end Core 2 chip in the future.
