alright, I have a floppy that's giving me the "a:\ drive is not accessible" thing... saying that the disk isn't formatted.. any software or anything that I can use to get the info off of it, or at least try to? I know you can do this kinda thing with hard drives, so I was wondering if it was possible to do this with a floppy..

Have you tried a different floppy in the drive? To test and see if its either the drive for the floppy. Have you tried that floppy in a different drive?
 
or tried a different cable?
checjk connections and that the pins are correct
if the OS cant read the FDD, then how would any data recovery ap?

so get that sorted out first
 
I know the drive that i'm trying to read it with works fine, the problem is with the disk.
 
Basic, I know, but humor me. Have you "unlocked" the disk, by moving the tab in the top left corner so you can see through it? :D

I haven't used floppies in years, so I don't know what error it might give you.
 
that should just write protect the floppy.. you should still be able to read it without a problem. I just needed to get some info off of it. it's actually too late now :) so I don't really need help with this anymore, though if someone does know a way to access lost data on a floppy it might be nice for future reference.

All floppy disks are formatted in the FAT12 version of the file system; this is the oldest flavor of FAT and is sufficient for the small capacity of floppies. The cluster size of floppy disks is either one or two sectors, depending on the disk type.
 
if you're stuck somewhere without any software tools:

9x/ME: scandisk
NT4/2K/XP: chkdsk... is destructive, but it can sometimes rescue files. (so, if you can wait for other tools to become available, wait for em)
 
I am having the same troubles lately with my floppy drives also, I tried another floppy drive and had the same problem. I also tried to save my data onto another computer, formatted the floppy disk and put the data back on. This works sometimes, but I do think the floppy drives last for at least 2 weeks before they fail.

Look at this, this way, they can mass produce them, don't have to worry to update the drive, like with the cd drives, new technology comes out and updates the cd-rom, while the floppy drive is left untouched. Plus it is cheap to make and sell, why do you think the 5.25in floppy drive lasted soo long, everybody was selling it, failure rate was high, cheap to produce and was replaced faster than the cd-rom.


Chances are it is either the drive that has gone bad or the floppy disk.
 
what is a floppy anyway ;)

haven't used one in YEARS and have not had a floppy in my system for the last 3 or so..honestly it sounds like the disk is bad or the drive is starting to go...last floppy drive I had worked part of the time and would read disks every other Thursday if there was a full moon so I said screw it and never looked back
