I'm still using Microsoft usb optical intellimice that I've had years.
Every now and then one started going on the fritz,
at which point i'd just grab an unused replacement.
2 mice later, I decided the problem was worth solving.
Turns out that the wires 'break' right where the cable comes into the mouse.
My solution was to open up the mouse (two screws under the rear foot pads)
and make the cable loop around the clicker thing for the right mouse button.
Before closing it up, make sure the mouse works.
If not, fiddle with the wire @ its "broken" spot till the mouse lights up.
I brough three different mice back to life this way.
Aren't you pack rats glad you haven't thrown away your broken hardware?
