I want to attempt to overclock my CPU just a tad, maybe 10 or 15%.

I have the Core i7 920 stock speed 2.66 ghz, stock cooler unit

memory is:

Case is an antec skeleton, so plenty of open air.

Motherboard is an asus P6T-SE. How far can I overclock this puppy and have it remain stable? And how would I do this in the bios settings.
 
So... does that mean I should attempt it or not? I didn't want to go all the way to 3.8 on a stock cooler, just maybe 3.4 or 3.6........
 
Just follow the below article for i5 750 OC to 4.2ghz (i7 is same as i5 but has hyperthreading support). It's what I used and have my i5 750 OC to 4.0ghz but it only OC to 4.0ghz when the system detects that it is needed. You just set power management to balanced in Vista/Win7 to get that. If you set to high speed then it will OC all the time. Basically, all you have to do is set AI Overclcock Tuner to manual control and adjust CPU FSB and RAM FSB and leave everything else at auto managed.

You won't get a high OC with the stock cooler though so don't even attempt 4.0ghz. 3.4ghz or so should be doable though. A few software tools you should get are CPUZ to see CPU, Ram and GPU speeds as they change dynamically, Asus ProbeII to monitor heat, voltages and fan speeds, prime95 to stress the CPU so you can make sure it is stable at the OC you set, and Furmark from below link as that stresses both CPU and GPU so you can monitor heat of both CPU and GPU at the same time.

Only other thing you need is a bit of luck and I would suggest investing in one of the elite HSF (like Noctua) instead of using the stock Intel HSF.

I didn't think the noctua would fit inside the antec skeleton. So what cooler would be best to switch out for the stock to reach at least 3.8 ghz?
 
Just looked up that case, cool design but you are right that it won't fit any of the tower style HSFs. For good cooling and lower profile I would look to Zalman maybe or invest in water cooling kit. I recently had to re-build two computers because I bought an ATI 5870 and it was too long for my mid tower case so had to put it into my old full tower Antec which could fit that card and still have a good 6" for an even longer card if such a beast comes along. On that Antec case they put the HDDs above were the video card sits so the HDDs don't cause any obstruction at all like on a lot of the newer case designs.

I believe they do but I still stick to Asus motherboards because they have never let me down yet, except on my P5K because thye came up with the not-so-bright idea of putting a PS2 keyboard port on it but no PS2 mouse port and I needed both for my PS2 only KVM. Had to go buy a USB kvm and USB keyboard because of that idiocy in design and not paying close enough attention to the specs on my part. I mean really, what is the point of a mb with keyboard PS2 port with no mouse PS2 port? Oh yea, someone told me IO could use a PS2 splitter to make the PS2 port work for both mouse and keyboard so bought one online and that did'nt work at all. Those splitters are for laptops that have something different in their hardware or bios support so they will work. But I digress.
 
Uh, anyone got any cooler recommendations to overclock to at least 3.8 ghz and will fit my case?
