Hi. I just bought a metal gear box external enclosure (firewire and usb2) to accomodate my wdse 160gb

the housing isnt too great and i can trigger the lights by hitting the hdd but that's beside the story

I don't recall having to do a full format the first time I initialize a harddrive. Is this true? Maybe I haven't formatted for the first time in windows before. If I try a quick format, it'll fail. And I'm going on my full format right now. It's been about 15 minutes and I'm 15% done on the 160gb drive. Is this normal?

edit: actually, the lights go off when i hit the desk of type hardly even. I'm going to dissemble it again and check for a short somewhere
 
The hdd probably came formatted at fat32. Full format isn't a bad idea anyways, since it'll let you know right away if any part of the disk is unusable thru manufacturer error.

Hitting the enclosure isn't a good idea.

It didn't come formatted at all. Windows had to initialize it before I could do anything to it. I've never used windows for disk management, so I'm guessing it's just setting the mbr??

www.ranish.com has been my program of choice for years and years but I can't use it for an external since it's not detected in dos
