so i've had an athlon 64 3200+ newcastle for a while and haven't really overclocked it before.been kind of questioning whether or not now was the right time to switch over to 939. kind of hassled, i'm getting a great deal on an x850xtpe.. AGP. unfortunately the boards i've been eyeballing are pci-e and i am really irritated. but i know i won't get a better deal on a card so i better make the best of what i have, so i'll be purchasing a 3700+ san diego within a month and hopefully by then the rumored dfi 939 nf3 board will hit the streets. until then, i'm gonna push my cpu to the limits.
for the past few days i've been trolling, sorry, the forums here reading up on overclocking and stuff in general and felt like i gathered enough info to take a swing. picked up a few programs, a64 tweaker, everest, clockgen etc. i've been trying different things to see what speeds i can get. at first i couldn't go above 200fsb and boot, don't know why, don't remember how i fixed it. then i couldn't change the cpu voltage in bios, it had something to do with the motherboard "features"...i fixed that. i set my fsb at 205 and ran fine, everything in prime95 stable. woohoo, really hah. anyways upon further reading and messing around with a64 tweaker i set my 'value ram' to 2-2-2-5... it's mosel RAMTEK memory by patriot, i got 3 512mb sticks of it, spent about a hundred bucks, so i feel it's money well spent. i realized the last number, lower isn't necessarily better. i fired up everest and had like 68 latency with those settings... changed it to 2-2-2-11 and got 63.2 or something. not sure what it should be.
anyways i'm really stuck right now. i did get my fsb set to 228 (windows wouldnt boot @ 229+) on 2-2-2-5 memory. (at that point i was still pretty unaware of more overclocking information, completely clueless on dividers and crap)...it would fail prime95 within a minute. aww nuts. so i read more on the forums and got more in-depth in the memory timings and such, and realized i was still a n00b. so i bumped my fsb down to 205 again where i knew it was stable.. (2%)
i tinkered with a few settings (my stock memory timings are 3-3-3-8 apparently) and got quite frustrated that my memclock was 147mhz... THEN it magically went to 133. i realized that for some reason my memory was running @ 2100 speed. LOL weak. it had to do with my timings. so i guess i can only get 3200@3-3-3-8. really disappointed.
i certainly didn't purchase the memory because it was fast, but i feel like it should do better than that.
sorry if this is a tangent, i'm kind of jotting down what i'm running into. basicly what i'm asking here is, what can i do? what are my limits? i don't have many options in the bios for memory (i have a asus k8v motherboard) and i just don't really know where i'm going. and after reading several posts about memory dividers, i'm STILL clueless. i've kind of got it figured out that my 133mhz memory speed would be a 2/3 divider, but how do i change any of this?
anyone out there have a similar setup with suggestions? i'd like to get 2.4 at least out of this thng stable while keeping my ram at 3200 haha. i'd also like to possibly overclock my ram.
specs:
cpu - athlon 64 3200+ newcastle (s754)
