First ever PC build

I'm looking to build myself a small gaming PC over this summer, never built a complete PC before but I've upgraded/repaired hardware before so not a complete newbie... I was thinking of a Silverstone SG05 as it's tiny, looks nice, and can fit a decent GPU in.

Case/PSU: Silverstone SG05, Silverstone Strider 450W
Motherboard: MSI B75IA-E33
Processor: Intel Core I5 3550P
Graphics: XFX HD 7870 DD
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2x4GB
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB

Excluding an optical drive this comes to about £550, would like some opinions. I'd also like to know whether it'd be worth waiting for the GTX760, but I'd guess that it will be quite a bit pricier than the 7870...
 
Your build looks good to me, op.

The gtx 760 is rumored to launch on the 27th, with prices ranging from $250-299 (in the u.s.). I would probably wait to see how it performs, however your 7870 should be no slouch.
 
Looks fine :)

Only recommendation I have is to use a 120GB SSD as boot drive, you'll be very happy with the performance compared to a regular drive. You can use the mechanical drive for things that don't need fast access.
 
For lower end boards I usually prefer Gigabyte's quality and features. As for ssd's I would recommend at least 180gb if you can afford it.
 
Great build, I would also highly recomend a SSD. AND, if you can get a 3570k. Youll thank yourself later with these 2 upgrades. it might net you only ~80-100 more, but it's WAY worh it.
 
Thanks for the opinion guys, sounds positive. I'll probably get the case/PSU within the next 3 weeks and finish the build before the end of August so I can check out the Gigabyte mobo and 3570k. It also gives a bit of time to decide whether a new generation graphics card will be worth it.

As for an SSD, I'd love one but right now that would be a bit of a luxury item for me as I'm only just about to finish being a poor student this year... But I may splash out on a nice one in time.

AsRock as well. I've never experienced anything but good things with their low end and high end stuff.

Funny you should mention that, I've been looking at the 4th gen i5s as the price jump isn't too big and AsRock have quite a few itx boards for 1150 already... Would the Silverstone psu handle a 4670K along with a 760GTX though? I wouldn't be overclocking much and the rest of my build doesn't seem power hungry.
 
GTX760 is like a mildly overclocked GTX660 Ti, so it can't be using more than about 175W. 4670K is less than 100W and the rest of the components not much more. You'll be fine with the ST45SF PSU.

Excellent, I'll keep hunting for a nice deal on a 4th gen i5 as the LGA1150 mobo will be more future proof.
 
Looks like a very nice first build, it shouldn't let you down.
Definitely listen to the SSD suggestions, using them as a boot drive is like a tech miracle.
And 1150 i5 CPU/Motherboard combos are on sale at Newegg, some come with a free 8GB RAM stick and Intel should be offering a copy Grid 2 on some of their CPUs.
 
First part bought, won an i5 4670k on ebay and it finished at £160 (brand new retail boxed). Think that was a pretty good find!

Yeah, unfortunately the price disparity between mid and high end graphics cards means that I probably won't be able to make a similar improvement in that area. :(
