So I am replacing an AMD Athalon 64 4000+ processor with an e2200. Also bought a msi p6n sli platinum mobo and 4gb (2gb x 2) G Skill ram. How much of a performance upgrade should I notice?

I realize it is a budget setup and I already have an 8800gs video card I plan to use with it along with a 74gb raptor as the main drive. Just looking for some feedback.
 
I really hope I see a good boost. Best part about the whole build was the total for what I had to buy was 150 and I had 135 sitting in paypal for a long long time now. Cost me like 21 and change on the credit card.
 
An e6300 will be about the same cost and probably perform better than that CPU.

Doubtful. This chip is 400MHz faster, which should more than make up for the cache difference. Plus, E6300s are fairly difficult to find nowadays (the Conroe-2M core was phased out in favour of the Allendale core, which is used in the E2xxx and E4xxx chips).

e2200 =$69.99

not sure theres a $13 performance boost but i would consider it.

Actually, that would definitely be worth $13. The E5200 is significantly faster than the E2200 in terms of both clock speed and performance per clock.
 
thanks for all the input guys. cant wait for it all to get here and put it together. funny thing is i have put together about 5 computers in the 1000-2000 range in the last 6 months for friends and haven't spent much on myself and got to use it.

for budget reasons did i go the right route with a low end intel compared to an equivalent amd? i know this is the intel forums but i feel like i made the right move.

I THINK AMD actually is better for budget, but the second you start spending $100 or more and get into the C2D/Q range I think there is no real denying intel's superiority.

but for the same 50 for a mobo and 50 for a processor going the amd route would i have got more performance? that's the real question.
 
You can find e2140/2160/2180 on hardforum for sale section around $40-45.

They all OC to 3.0ghz easily.

Only if you don't overclock. Once you factor in overclocking, Intel leads the pack in every price range.
 
Im kinda biased since i have the e5200 itself, but i love this god damm chip, i upgraded from a 3800x2 939 @ 2.8ghz, and to be honest, i did not notice that much of a diffrence in some of the games i play probably around 10fps increase total so its not a big deal to me, Crysis on the other hand, Wow, I went from a choppy 20-30 fps at med settings to Very high with 2x with no sluggish gameplay and fraps reports 30fps constant. I love it. Rez is 1680x1050 if your wondering.

Even more funny when my e5200 seems to be the oddball of the chip fam, It still clocks decently but requires some decent voltage behind it, I got it to a max 4.2ghz @ 1.5V bios, but i clocked it back down to 3.7ghz @ 1.37V, Since its all i need right now

If you have the extra budget, i would not go other than e8400/e8600. Other than that spend it on better overclocking ram, Sli/Cf mobo/ Or towards a better gpu and get the e5200.

As for your current buy, it should be an awesome difference from the 4000+, if i recall thats single core, i still have my 3700+ around here :p

I "upgraded" from a 3000+ 64x2(2.2ghz stock I think @ 2.8ghz) to an e7200. The stock 2.533ghz e7200 beat the 2.8ghz athlon in all games by 5-20fps. When i overclock the 72 to 3.6-3.8ghz there really is absolutely no comparison.
 
I just built my wife a cheapo system based around a e2160. In Vista, she idles at around 2-8% cpu usage around 20-30c while my Opty 175@2.6 idles between 10-20% all the time. I'm thinking of getting a decent 775 board and a e2160, OC the hell out of it and eventually drop a q9550 or the like in there. Even with a low end C2D chip I'd be getting a nice performance bump!!
 
ditto, i was in the whole ''my 939 is not bottlenecking my upgrades, ill stick it out'' nonsense, until i decided to pull the trigger into a entry level 775 setup, and no regrets so far, now that any cpu bottleneck is gone with my e5200, i realized my 9800gtx is dating more and more =[
