FireGL card for gaming?

Ok, my friend went to the store, and just asked for the most expensive card they had, which was a ATI FireGL X2 256t card.

He hasn't gotten any games going yet, because he's been having problems with certain components. What we are wondering is.. is this card going to be good for games? He's not concerned about the money aspect really.. but would it make sense to *try* and bring it back and get a 6800GT card?

You'd think he would research it first, but oh well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would consider that partially the stores fault. When someone asks "for the most expensive card" it usually means they want the fastest. Anyone in design would know what professional card they want or need. Because the consumer is not educated is not an excuse for a professional to guide him in the right direction.

Have him return that card and ask for a nvidia 6800 ultra or GT.

Stores who do things like that urk me to no end.

Agreed. But if he went somewhere like Best Buy, there's no guarantee that the person who sold it to him knew any better than he did. :)

I dunno, I mean... when you go anywhere and ask for "the most expensive ______ you have", you are practically asking to be ripped off. Maybe not intentionally, but the salesperson knows that that kind of person is not interested in the price/performance lecture... and that is why we see people walking out of stores with $5,000 Bose home theater systems, Voodoo laptops, etc. They are happy, the store is happy, but they still got ripped off ;)

Thanks a tonne for the help guys. I would have given the stores name, but he never told me. I will have to ask, heh.

I will tell him he should try to exchange it then.. hopefully they will have 6800U or something similar in stock.

Thanks again!

it sounds like he got exactly what he asked for!! But yeah...he should have checked out what he wanted etc...lol...i am sure they will exchange it for him...if they are a reputable retailer...

Your friend is a dumbass :D Reminds me of my days working retail.

customer: I want your most expensive whatever
me: oh yeah, sure this thing here is made in mongolia by turkish turd weavers, very 'in" right now or whatever :p

Going anywhere and asking for "the most expensive" thing thinking it's going to be synonymous with "the best" is just asking to be ripped off/disappointed/etc

Yeah, I agree. He also bought 4 raptor drives and 4gb of ram. Sweet, computer, but he overdid it a little for what he wants it for, heh.

He's bringing it back now, hopefully they will exchange it. Thanks again guys, appreciated!

He's a very smart guy, just not with computers :)

He wanted the best, so he bought the best.. so he thought.

I'll sell him a clue if he paypals me 1000 US$, sounds like he has money to burn.

Well, he wanted a mammoth system, and whoever helped him at the store was an idiot, obviously.

He's still a noob.

Give the guy a break, not everyone is good with hardware components.

Everyone has the niche of expertise and this ain't this. ;)

It sounds like an awesome system, any designer would drool over that beast. Tell him he did a good job, help him stripe the drives, and give him some direction. If the store wont take it back, post it in the fs/ft forum.

Also if this store doesent play ball feel free to post the name here so we all can make sure they are blackballed ;)

I certainly will, thanks! Yes, the drives were a good choice, they should rock. I will be sure to get the name of the store from him soon. Haven't heard from him since I posted this, but should soon.
