simplest way would be to setup a DHCP client, and then see where it gets its lease from.

You don't have a way to get a testing laptop or anything on the student side?

Well, DHCP is a broadcast thing... So you'd need to broadcast a DHCP Request on the local network.

(It's not like it runs on a specific TCP/UDP port, because after all, the client doesn't have an IP to communicate with yet)

If the network is that large, the net admins probably have a Fluke or something that could easily discover the offending machine.

Was about to suggest ethereal until i read down a bit. Just set it up with the filter "host 10.0.1.1" or whatever the IP and it will only log traffic from that machine. You should be able to see if its servicing DHCP requests.
