well, i finally got all my parts in.. and im just slowly taking everything off my motherboard so i can start putting the blocks on..

well, i have an asus a8n-sli premium mobo and took off the heatsink for the chipset.. under the heatsink, asus seams to use this cheapo conductor tape thingy instead of the spread.. well, im having trouble removing all of the excess.. anyone have any tips?

the chipset is kind of weird because under the heatsink, the chipset is covered by a small thermal-type tape with a square opening for the chipset.. it's not like all the chipsets i've seen.. so how will i spread arctic silver 5 on there? should i just do it as if it were a regular chip like the cpu?

for the cpu, there is a black bracket around the cpu as a mounting bracket for the fan, if i take off those two screws holding the black bracket, should i take off the bracket to install the block? or should i leave it on? i have a swiftech storm block..

on the other side of the heatsink for the chipset, there is the fins, when i took off the fins, there were maybe 10 little chip looking things that it was attached to with the nasty thermal tape thingy.. i was wondering if it would be ok to just leave it as it is without the heatsink, or if i should cut off the fins and attach it back onto those little suckers.. i would really like to keep the stock heatsink so if i ever want to go back and get rid of my WC, then i could always have the stock stuff to fall back on..

sorry for so many questions, but id like to do things right the first time so i wont have to mess with it again.. thanks!

never mind, the instructions say to keep the black bracket on..

Those are the power transistors for the boards power distribution. you really want to keep them cool for long life and stable overclocks.

Perhaps you could find a flat piece of copper, anything ... wait a minute, why are you taking it off ? I dont have that motherboard but just looked at the picture on asus web site. The inductiors are in between the cpu mounting and the finned heatsink with the power transistors under it and they stick up fairly high off the board. OK I probally mistaken about what you are doing but if its the long somewhat skinny finned heatsink between the cpu socket and the rear I/O connectors you would be well advised to leave it alone unless you absolutely must remove it for some reason. If you do have to remove it, I would highly recommend you have a small fan blowing direclty on that area (the 10 little chips).

i have a chipset block for my watercooling system.. i had to take off the chipset heatsink in order to get the block on.. the heatsink has a rod going to those fins and uses it as a radiator kinda.. it's all one piece, so i had to take them off.. it is just sitting there and i guess ill find something to do with it to keep it cool..

any suggestions?
