I finally got all my parts and after a long, arduous 8 hours...it is complete. It seemed like everything that could go wrong did and patching Vista took forever. Ah well...now I just have to test stability but it seems good so far.

What kind of problems did you have? Please post back after you're rested ;)
 
Also curious as to why it took 8 hours. I tore down my p45 system and built the i7 rig in my rig in just a couple of hours and everything went pretty much as expected. It was a very smooth upgrade.
 
Well, for starters I installed the heatsink facing the wrong way...then when i removed it, one of the screws would NOT come out. Typical random shit that almost never happens. The rest of the hardware was relatively easy...just took time due to the enormous size of the video cards...I had to plan everything carefully. After that, the thing would not power on. Could not get the power supply to turn on...mainly because I am an idiot and did not realize that the power button on my NEW case is on the outside of the door, and the button on the inside (where my last one was) is the reset button. That lost me a good half an hour figuring that out. Then, I had to flash bios, install Vista (which took FOREVER for some reason), patch Vista, which took a good 2 hours, and install drivers for everything else. 8 hours start to total finish (aside from stress testing). Quite a long day. Seems like this one did not want to just work at any stage, which I guess was too much to ask for given my last 2 were flawless. A good portion of it is just due to me being a dope today and not eating lunch before I started :D. No fuel for the brain I guess. :p
 
That sucks.
Ive had everything but the mobo and ram for a while. Got the case already beautifully wired and ready. Just need to pull the mobo out of the box, install the CPU and screw it into the case. Mobo will be here thursday, but newegg shipped the ram via USPS. No ETA yet. :( proper planning and all that.

Is your HS a TRUE? I dont think the stocker is directional...Hell. I dont know if there a benefit to installing the TRUE one direction vs the other. LOL at the power button. ;)
 
I'm using a TRUE with my Gigabyte Extreme . . . Corsair Dominators. These three pieces don't go well together. I have 3x2gb now but if I wanted to do 12GB and fill up all the RAM slots, I'll have to either get a different HSF or shorter RAM b/c the front fan on the TRUE interferes with the very first DIMM if a Dominator is used there. Lovely.

Does anyone know if the Asus P6T series of motherboard have the same issue with the ram slots and using a TRUE like this person experienced?
 
I have the True with the fan..well, I positioned the heatsink so that the fan would have to be blowing the exhaust at the ram or the psu instead of out of the case.

As for it being hot today, crap tomorrow..ahh well that is computing. However, at least it will play games well for me for the forseeable while. My last machine was top notch and played everything I threw at it well for 5 years, which made me happy.

Positive note...I have ZERO problems getting Vista or the board to recognize my video cards, run SLI, or recognize all 12 gb of RAM.

From the look of it (granted only through pictures and not actual hands on experience), the P6T LOOKS to have more room between the CPU socket and the DIMM's. The Gigabyte board has the DIMM pretty close to the CPU.

Here's a pic (that first stick is in the SECOND slot - the first slot is un-usable with my setup right now):

You can see that the height of the DHX heatsink is about 1/3 to 1/2" taller than the lowest part of the fan.

Same is with that Noctua cooler, it blocks also the 1st slot on UD5, which is almost same as Extreme.

If Asus has same placement of CPU socket as Gigabyte, then it's same stuff. Guess you have to use EVGA if want to get all 12 GB ram, as their socket is placed a bit away from ram.

On the other hand, it will be new edition of boards, before you will need 12gb ram on daily basis :)
 
after my new case comes tomorrow (downgrading my ll v1000b plus2 w to a $59 antec 900 for several reasons) i will put this stuff together with my old drives and my "old" hd4870's. after i stoke it up i will posy more pics/log and bios settings for future evga x58 users.

There were ZERO issues installing the RAM with the TRUE heatsink. In fact, I put the last 4 sticks of RAM in at the very end after installing and patching Vista and it was super easy. Plenty of room.
 
yea, re the black true. several online stores are selling them as socket 1366 hs. they do not, repeat, do not come with 1366 mounting hardware. luckily i had bought a 1366 bolt thru kit for my ultima 90 when they came in stock at sidewinder a few weeks ago.
 
dam I need to see if these sticks will work in my machine, I just got in another set in the mail.. great.
 
I just threw my comp together last night, installed Vista Ult. 64 and worked a alot on wire management. I will post some pics of it later tonight. As of right now its still sitting @ 2.6 but I will be trying for 3.6 tonight :D. According to an Admin on the EVGA forum with the right ram the 920 can 4.5 on air lol. Not sure if I want to push mine that much. :D I just want to eliminate any CPU bottle-necking.

I ordered my 1366 Bolt-thru kit from FrozenCPU around 4pm on Monday, payed for 2 day shipping. It was at my door at 12pm, Tuesday. That is simply amazing. Took less than a day, only 20 hours, even though I payed for 2 day shipping. I have had overnight items take longer than that.

The only sad part is that the shipping cost more than the kit, but I highly recommend Frozencpu to anyone that needs something.
