dont know if this has been posted before, and sorry if it has, but my search skills arent so good
had a problem with file corruption, at first it looked like pretty much one or 2 folders of every game instalation i had were corrupt, then firefox, fraps, and others
after shutdown, it didnt boot back, put in the windowsXP disk and the partition was gone, just shows unknown on the file system desc
i had to reinstall windows and all
but my question is this, was this the memory or the hard drive fault?
its a brand new 200gb WD ATA 133 drive, and the memory is 2 cheap ass sticks one 128 and another 256mb ive been using while i get 1gb of good ram (my system is under construction)

now it never happened before on an old WD drive i have, but then again i used to format that one pretty often

any help appreciated

well thanks for clearing that out, been running the cpu at 1.9ghz for some months now, its an old willy p4 1.6, the fsb is at 119 so i guess the memory decided to go bad on my just when i had everything installed and eunning (god ffxi takes its time to update)
well, at least it may not be the drive, id hate to go throug RMA cause i live in mexico and id have to ask a friend to go to the store in the U.S. since i dont have a passport

When you got the drive did you have Service Pack 1 installed? Is/was windows installed on the 200GB drive?

i actually made 2 partitions, one for system and one for storage, and it was fresh windows install, i didnt do the service pack thing cause it takes me quite some time, im on 256k dsl(damn isps in mexico...no competition) it was just installed last week tho, i just reformatted and well, ill overnight the service pack install

Run memtest86+ on your memory..if no errors try posting at the disk storage forum and perhaps the regulars there might have a solution for you.

It could be spyware or a virus not sure .. good luck man

How did you have it partitioned? Because WindowsXP didn't ship with 48bit LBA (for accessing drives over 137GB). I'm not sure if this meant it had trouble accessing a drive over 137GB or a partition over 137GB. All I know is I had trouble with file corruption with a 160GB Maxtor (one whole partition) before I installed SP1.

hmm, ill do the sp1 install and the registry modification for the 137gb+ drives, ill also run memtest, how long does the thing run? or how long is it recomended to run

it did it again, i just rebooted after reinstalling the catalyst drivers and boom, firefox is corrupt, temp internet files folder is corrupt too...
its only afecting the windows partition, not the storage one tho, damn, so think going back to stock speed could do some help, those 300mhz were nice while they lasted tho :(

You might need to make a slip streamed SP1/SP2 WindowsXP CD.

I had a hard time finding the redistributable SP2, but try this link here and select the closest mirror.

Next, here's a site that outlines the proceedure, I still need to do this myself. Good luck.

well, im back from a format....
rebooted to go back to stock speeds and there it was "the file c:\windows\xxxxxxx.xxxxx.xxxx or somtething is an invalid windows image file and could not be loaded" no boot.... so i had to reformat, im going through the regular updates right now, will do sp overnight

HDD corruption then. If you OC too high on some boards it O/C's the IDE channel it can cause data corruption.

so youre sayin the hdd is fd up? or going back to stock will fix it, im running on stock right now but i havent got the the moment where it got corrupt last time (right after doing the updates the cats didnt load so i guess they corrupted, after reinstalled firefox was corrupted)

well, there we go again, stock speed now, i just rebooted and it told me some file from my SB audigy drivers is corrupt, im ready to RMA this disk,or make my ram purchase this week, wichever is fked up, wouldnt want to buy new ram just yet, since i need some other stuff, like food, and umm, electricity and stuff, ykno, the basics :D
well seems like ill be out of a pc for a few days :( *sigh*

EDIT*: i was going to do another post for this but, ill just edit my last, what used to happen every now and then was that the pc would reboot without warning, or just freeze while running a game, it would happen most often(like once every 2-4 hrs) in the middle of the afternoon when it was warmer, but it happened sporadicaly at other times too
so this means it may be the ram right?
im such a foo for ocing with such shitty ram i know, but i was desperate, and new cpu wont come till a month or more T.T
please ne the ram, i was enjoying this drive so far :(

sleep time now, im starting to think its the ram, but i dont want to jump into conclusions yet, may just need to change the hard drive, but my burner just died on me and i dont have something else to back up files.
well thanks for all the input, and if someone else posts thanks too
ill leave memtest overnight to see what i get(is it a good idea?)
i really hope its the ram, cause its just some cheap ass ram i got for emergency

LAST EDIT before sleep :p.> forgot to mention that i downloaded the half life barricade video, the exe file, tried runnin it this morning and after like 20 seconds it would just close and a DOs window would show for a brief instant, i could barely read it said "program does not fit in memory" i have 384 of ram and had about 200 free, it was a 120ish mb file, i dont think it wouldnt fit in memory, so, making a last guess, i think it may be the ram wich is actually dyin on me already? please confirm that, or it maybe confirmed with memtest tonite, i really hope its the ram and not the drive *sigh*

memtest showed no errors overnight...
i was able to boot again, wich i found weird, hevent seen any files corrupt, yet

Check your PSU voltages.

Uneven voltages can cause reboots and such, which in turn can cause data corruption. It's happened to me on two different systems and a new PSU fixed the reboots and I got no more data corruption.

Haven't heard of it happening so regularly as in your situation, though. Data errors on Windows installation or Windows crashing on installation has always been a RAM problem for me. Moving the sticks around in their slots (ye olde K7S5A solution) or bumping the voltage a bit sometimes helped.

well, havent got any problems with the last format, just a registry rollback today when i booted, maybe its the psu too, i was thinking about that today, its an old 300w that came with the case i got, was planning on updating once i got a new case, but, with a 9800pro, 2 cd drives, 2 hard drives, and the new soundcard, maybe its showing its age, and the fact that its cheap and crappy ><
well, my friend is gonna give me a stick of 512mb for 30 bucks he owes me, its gonna do untill i get the xms, maybe thatll fix my prob, ill also unplug the other hard drive since i dont use it, and the burner cause it doesnt burn anymore or read origianls (it died all of a sudden a few weeks back, it was 3 years old)
hope this solutions fix it good till i can finish it, btw i was going intel, but with the recent price drops im switching for an A64 3000+ :D

Ummm yeah, I'd say you have that PSU running on its ragged edge. Get a new one, pronto.

well thanks to all for the help, i had to go back to stock speed but now its 3 days with no corruption, still, i want to prevent it so ill have to get new parts ASAP
thanks for all the help everyone
